Disney Premieres A Whole New Version of 'A Whole New World' With Zayn And Zhavia For 'Aladdin'
"Aladdin" is a very special film for any kid of the 90s. Released in 1992, the film follows the adventures of a street urchin who is granted three wishes by a genie who comes from a mysterious golden lamp. The film became a cultural phenomenon, breaking multiple records at the box office and even securing two sequels and a television series. However, "Aladdin" may be most remembered for its music.
The film won the Academy Award for Best Score and the Academy Award for Best Original Song for “A Whole New World.” Music from "Aladdin" also dominated the Grammy Awards, winning four awards, including the coveted Song of the Year prize.
Now, a new generation will be able to experience the wonders of "Aladdin" as a live-action adaption on the classic original will be released later this month. The film will have some of Hollywood’s A-list talent playing the iconic characters, including Mena Massoud as Aladdin, Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine, and Will Smith as the Genie.
Like the animated film, the live-action adaption will also feature breathtaking musical numbers, one of which will be the famous “A Whole New World.”
As fans eagerly await the soundtrack’s full release on May 22, the album’s first single, a cover of “A Whole New World” by Zayn Malik and Zhavia Ward, is already making a stir.
Zayn and Zhavia’s rendition of the song, which will play during the film’s end credits, is already being praised by music industry insiders. Mitchell Leib, who heads Disney’s music department, lauded Zayn’s work with the song, telling the press that he gave the classic melody a contemporary edge.
Leib also noted that Zayn selected Zhavia himself to be his partner in the duet because of her powerful vocals. In all, Leib says that the selection of staff behind the music was a key part in updating such a classic song.
For her part, Zhavia posted that she was very pleased to be part of the duet and hopes that audiences will enjoy their version.
While most of the songs in the new film will be versions of classics from the animated film reports TooFab, it will also feature two entirely new music numbers, including one sung by Jasmine called “Speechless.” Audiences will also be pleased with a rendition of “Friend Like Me” performed by Will Smith and DJ Khaled.
