When a child has a disability, doing everyday things is often difficult or seemingly impossible.

Something as simple as going to the grocery store and using a shopping cart could be a major hassle for a parent with a child who has a disability.

Doing Everyday Things

However, it is important for a child with a disability to have a full spectrum of experiences and to see the world. A simple visit to the store should be a simple event.

Taking any child to the grocery store can be an exercise in frustration. A child with a disability may experience sensory overload. In the case of mom Melody Leach, her three-year-old daughter could not fit in the baby section of the shopping cart.

A Mom's Valid Complaint

Her daughter has cerebral palsy, which makes it difficult for her to move. The little girl cannot crawl, has trouble with muscle tone and cannot see well. If Melody pushes her daughter in a stroller, she cannot use a shopping basket. Still, she feels that her daughter should be able to come with her for something as simple as a small grocery shopping trip.

The mom complained to the store about the lack of bigger carts to accommodate older children with disabilities. These products already exist. They are called "Caroline's Cart," and they have special seats for big kids along with a buggy to hold groceries.

The Store's Compassionate Response

Melody reached out to the King Sooper's store manager, Mike. This empathetic man went above and beyond Melody's expectations. He contacted the company's upper management in order to see what they could do in order to better serve families like Melody's.

Not only did the store manager get the shopping cart, but he also got Melody's daughter a new wheelchair.
