Disabled Dad Plans Gift For Daughter In Secret And His Prescription Bottle Circulates On Twitter

Jim Porterfield, a man living in Texas, was severely injured back in 1981 when he was involved in an accident caused by a drunk driver. Doctors told Porterfield that due to his injuries he was unlikely to ever walk again.

In spite of his disability, Jim worked a full-time office job for 30 years. His income kept food on the table and paid the bills while he raised four kids. Unfortunately, due to a recent layoff, Jim has fallen on hard times. His disability has made it challenging for him to find work. Unfortunately, he's not eligible to go on Medicare until 2020.

Even though he's been financially strapped lately, Jim still cares about doing what he can to help out his children. He has been stashing away his spare change in one of his prescription medicine bottles for about the past month. He hasn't been doing this for himself. It was a gift he intended to give as a surprise for his daughter Morgan.

Morgan posted about the small but touching monetary gift on her Twitter account. She explained how her dad's physical and mental handicap and age made him unable to currently earn an income. Then she shared how she had noticed him saving his change.

When she came home from work, she found out what he had been saving it for. Inside that prescription bottle, her dad had written a tiny note that said, "$11.19 - Coffee Money. Love, Dad." It also included the date and a drawing of a heart with a smiley face inside.

'When I got home from work the night I found the change and sweet note in my room, I burst into tears,' she revealed to Love What Matters.

Morgan and her sister Krista were so touched by their dad's gift that they decided they wanted to do something to give back to him. They set up a GoFundMe account to raise money for his high medical bills. Due to his injuries, he's always had major medical expenses ever since the accident.

In one day the GoFundMe account raised more than the target amount they had suggested. Local media also covered the story.

Based on the generosity of those who gave, Jim's family was able to get him a customized leg brace and a new, more comfortable recliner.
