It has often been repeated that all good things must someday come to an end. This concept finally caught up with NBA superstar Dirk Nowitzki after 21 years with the Dallas Mavericks.

Nowitzki announced his retirement after an April 9 game against the San Antonio Spurs in which he scored 30 points.

Dirk Nowitzki is the only player in NBA history to play for one team over a 21 year period. The city of Dallas did not hesitate to voice their appreciation for him. When all is said and done, Nowitzki will be known as one of the greatest power forwards to ever play the game of basketball.

There was a display on the JumboTron that read 41.21.1. The crowd gave a standing ovation at the site of the numbers. They represented Nowitzki's jersey number which is 41, the twenty-one years he was with the Dallas Mavericks and the fact he had only played for one NBA team.

Fans anticipated this may be the last season for Nowitzki when he began to experience pain in his foot earlier in the year. He had not confirmed anything until now, however. The fans celebrated his career over the last month in a way befitting of his accomplishments.

There were posters and extra cheers for him both at home and away games. And Thank You, Dirk, was chanted heavily before his last home game.

The JumboTron played a number of videos that night in commemoration of the 21-year career of Nowitzki. He was touched by the show of love but one video, in particular, brought tears to his eyes. The video revealed a side of Nowitzki he worked to keep private.

Not many people were aware of the fact Nowitzki is a regular visitor to the Children's Medical center. And when he visits, he never fails to bring gifts for the children.

Keri Kaiser is the chief marketing officer for the Children's Medical Center. She says Nowitzki is both humble and empathetic. She says he also has a genuine concern for the children being treated at the hospital and their families.

Dirk Nowitzki, it turns out, is as great a man off the court as he is a basketball player on the court. Hats off to you Mr. Nowitzki.
