Dick Van Dyke will mark a historic milestone when he celebrates his 100th birthday on Dec. 13, 2025, a moment made even more meaningful as he reflects on the challenges, triumphs, and lessons that have shaped his extraordinary life.

Before his centennial birthday, the beloved entertainer spoke with PEOPLE about the most demanding periods of his early career, sharing insights also featured in his book, “100 Rules for Living to 100.” The publication showcased his personal rules for living with joy, resilience, and curiosity – principles that helped guide him through decades in the public eye.

Van Dyke’s career spanned iconic films and television classics such as “Mary Poppins”, “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang”, and “The Dick Van Dyke Show”. These works cemented his place in entertainment history and introduced generation after generation to his signature charm, physical comedy, and musical talent. Yet the actor’s path was far from easy in the beginning.

While working to establish himself in Hollywood, he also faced the immense responsibility of supporting a young family. With his late ex-wife, Margie Willett – whom he married in 1948 – Van Dyke welcomed four children and navigated the financial and emotional pressures of raising them during the earliest stages of his career.

In his book, the performer went beyond recounting his professional accomplishments. He opened up about his personal journey, sharing the wisdom he has gathered through a century of life. Van Dyke reflected on what he hoped would endure long after he was gone, emphasizing his deep love for children’s entertainment and the joy it continues to inspire worldwide. His reflections offered a rare look at the man behind the performances – and the values that guided him through both hardship and success.

Looking back on the early period of his career, Van Dyke explained the financial stress, sharing:

“In the beginning I was (raising) in a family with no money, so the whole thing was getting some money together and getting a home.”

Van Dyke recalled the lengths he went to keep his career alive:

“I bought a home on the GI Bill, finally, but I think the toughest was, I did game shows. I played nightclubs. I did about everything. At one point, I was doing a disc jockey show at 5 in the morning, and then at night I was working with a partner in nightclubs.”

He continued:

“I was getting like three or four hours sleep in between, but that’s the only thing I can remember, is working so hard to get going, to get a foothold. After that I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.”

Van Dyke acknowledged how those demanding years affected his family life:

“They probably got neglected at some point, because I was really working hard to get out of poverty, so to speak, but I haven’t had any complaints from anybody.”

However, he remained grateful for the privilege of loving his work.

“I think of how rare it is that a person gets to do for a living, what they love to do,” he said, adding, “Most people have to go sit in an office. I never forgot that I look forward to getting up every morning and going to work, because it’s what I would’ve done for nothing.”

The actor saw his legacy not in fame, but in the magic he helped create for children:

“What I left in the way of children’s entertainment and children’s music – that’s my legacy.”

Van Dyke emphasized that as long as songs like “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” and “Chim Chim Cher-ee” live on, so would a part of him.
