Details Behind Simon Cowell's Private Affair With Lauren Silverman Disclosed

Simon Cowell is known for being one of the harshest and most critical judges on talent competition shows. He’s a record executive, television personality and entrepreneur, and has also used his platform for the betterment of others, engaging in philanthropic activities over the years. “The X Factor,” “Britain’s Got Talent,” “America’s Got Talent” and “American Idol” are some of the most popular shows on Cowell’s resume.

Cowell had always been surrounded by musical influences growing up, so it was no surprise when he entered the entertainment industry with a strong focus on the music business. He helped launch the careers of many musical artists and bands, such as One Direction and Little Mix, who all got their big break on his competition shows. The music mogul has played a hand in the business side of his own entertainment company, Syco Entertainment, and has also worked on the production side of many musical releases.

When he is not busy judging others on television or working with various musical artists, Cowell spends time with his family, which is made up of his longtime girlfriend Lauren Silverman and their adorable son Eric, who live together in their family home in Malibu, California.

Although the happy couple is seen in a bright light now, the relationship started off a bit controversial. Despite the widespread media attention and bad press they first received, Silverman and Cowell have persevered and are still together to this day. The two are very supportive of each other and have stayed by each other’s sides through all of their ups and downs.

Early Life And Career

Cowell was born on Oct. 7, 1959 in Lambeth, London, in England. He grew up surrounded by music and people in the entertainment industry, as his mother and father were both involved with jobs in that field. Julie Brett, his mother, was a ballet dancer and popular socialite, while his father, Eric Selig Phillip Cowell, was a music industry executive. His father had also worked as a property developer and estate manager. Cowell also has a younger biological brother, Nicholas Cowell, as well as three half-brothers and one half-sister, John, Tony, Michael and June.

The now incredibly famous man started out with some decent jobs but couldn’t seem to stick with any of them. He worked as a runner on the 1980 horror film “The Shining” and also worked in the mailroom at EMI Music Publishing, where his father was an executive. This spurred Cowell to become more interested in the music industry, and he began working on creating his own label.

After a minor setback with his initial record company, Cowell formed Fanfare Records alongside Iain Burton. The record label first started out by selling exercise videos and working with musical artists, and it helped Cowell gain early success. Unfortunately, the good times didn’t last long for Cowell, as the company went under in 1989, leaving him close to bankruptcy. Cowell didn’t let this stop him from pursuing his goal of being a titan in the music industry. He continued on with a career in the music business and set up S Records under BMG

Two actors, Robson Green and Jerome Flynn, signed with the company in 1995 and recorded the song “Unchained Melody.” The song was a hit and quickly topped the charts in the United Kingdom, as well as becoming the best-selling single of the year. Green and Flynn became a duo, now named Robson & Jerome, releasing their self-titled album in 1995 as well, which also became the best-selling album of the year. After hitting his stride, Cowell was relishing the success and was able to sign more acts to the record label, such as Westlife and Five.

Establishing himself as a big name in the music business, Cowell was looked at as a prominent figure in the entertainment industry. He became a judge on the popular talent competition show “American Idol” in 2002 in the United States. Cowell was extremely blunt with contestants and was looked at as the mean judge compared to the others on the judging panel, namely Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul. The show was extremely successful and is still on TV today, although none of the original judges are still on the program.

In 2005, Cowell started a new company called Syco Entertainment, which was split into three units to focus on music, television and film. The first group he signed to the music side of the new company was Il Divo, an international operatic pop group. The television side focused on competition shows, such as “The X Factor,” in both the United Kingdom and the United States. Alongside Sharon Osbourne and Louis Walsh, Cowell was featured as a judge on the U.K. version of “The X Factor.”

The show was extremely popular in the U.K., and the first season launched the career of British singer Leona Lewis, who went on to release hits such as “Bleeding Love” and “Better in Time.” The singer’s winning song was “A Moment Like This,” which was originally sung by the first-ever American Idol winner, Kelly Clarkson.

In August 2007, the show welcomed a fourth judge, Dannii Minogue. The judging panel changed once again in 2008 when pop singer Cheryl Cole replaced Osbourne, as she had decided not to return for another season. In 2010, Cowell found the band of a lifetime when the members of One Direction auditioned as solo artists, and the judges on the competition series decided to put them together in one group. They went on to place third overall in the series but had great success following the show.

Cowell signed the group to Syco, and they went on to sell out arenas and stadiums around the world before going on hiatus in 2015, with no return date in sight. Cowell was then replaced by Garlow Barlow from the boyband Take That but still signed the winners of the next season to his label. Little Mix, who were formed in the same way as One Direction, was the first group to ever win the competition show and are still together today despite member Jesy Nelson leaving in late 2020.

Cowell reconnected with Abdul and Cole for the American version of “The X Factor” in September 2011. The show aired on Fox and also starred L.A. Reid and Nicole Scherzinger. Much like the British version, the show went through a series of judges throughout its lifetime, including Demi Lovato, Kelly Rowland and Britney Spears.

Along with establishing himself as a tough judge and critic on the various “The X Factor” series, Cowell also made his presence known on “America’s Got Talent” and “Britain’s Got Talent.” The American version debuted in June 2006, with the British series following shortly after in June 2007. Susan Boyle was one of the most famous winners to come from the “Got Talent” series as a whole, as she stunned audiences with her brilliantly beautiful voice. The series was named the world’s most successful reality TV format by Guinness World Records in 2014, as it had spin-offs in over 68 countries at the time.

Fame, money and success came with Cowell’s long career, and the music mogul decided to use his platform to help others. He is a patron of Together for Short Lives, a charity in the U.K. that helps children with life-threatening and life-limiting conditions. During the Concert for Diana at Wembley Stadium in July 2007, Cowell made an appearance as a speaker to celebrate the life of the late Princess Diana. Proceeds from the concert went to Diana’s charities, as well as the charities of her sons Prince William and Prince Harry.

Cowell also used his talent to help with his charitable projects and worked on the production of the charity single “Everybody Hurts'' in aid of victims of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. He later collaborated with a number of British singers, including Robbie Williams and Dua Lipa, to record and release a charity single “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” The proceeds went to the families of the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire in London in June 2017 and to the London Community Foundation.

Recovering From A Serious Injury

Cowell had to take a break from being one of the most beloved television villains after he suffered an accident in August 2020. He took to Instagram to explain what happened. “If you buy an electric trail bike, read the manual before you ride it for the first time. I have broken part of my back,” Cowell wrote. According to People magazine, the injury required a five-hour surgery where he had fusions and a metal rod put in his back.

Cowell did an interview for Access Hollywood with his co-stars from “America’s Got Talent” in February 2021. The group talked about being able to go into the new season together and how they were starting auditions the following month. Cowell’s injury was healed and he was ready to get back to work. He explained how he felt “100 percent” better from the extreme amount of exercise he needed to do in order to recover from such a serious injury.

“You have to walk for miles a day,” he explained. Despite having a broken back for the better part of the past six months, Cowell was in relatively good spirits, mentally and physically. “I literally do feel more healthy than I did before,” he said. Cowell made light of the situation as he continued to talk about just how much better he was feeling. “I would suggest to anyone, when you want to stay healthy, break your back,” he said jokingly, thinking of all the physical activity he has put his body through to get to where he is today.

Meet Lauren Silverman, Cowell’s Longtime Girlfriend

The news about Cowell’s current relationship first broke in 2013 when the world found out the TV villain was not only about to be a father but was in a long-term relationship. Even more shocking was that Cowell was having a baby with Silverman, who was still married to Andrew Silverman, one of Cowell’s closest friends at the time.

According to US Weekly, Cowell first met Silverman and her now-ex-husband on vacation at Barbados’ Sandy Lane resort in 2004, and the three soon sparked a friendship that would last long after their vacation ended. As the years went by, Cowell would enter, and then soon exit, many relationships, even briefly becoming engaged to Mezhgan Hussainy, a makeup artist from “American Idol” between 2010 and 2011, according to The Sun.

Both Cowell and Silverman were unhappy in their relationships and secretly began an on-again, off-again affair with one another. They were forced to come clean about their love affair in 2013 when the American socialite became pregnant with Cowell’s child. The news became a massive scandal as Silverman was still technically married at the time. Soon after the story became public, her then-husband filed for an “at-fault” divorce, citing her adultery with Cowell as the sole reason, according to the Daily Mail.

During an interview with The Mirror in 2013, Cowell admitted that he was not proud of how his relationship with Silverman began, especially considering the hurt that was caused as a result. “I regret that part,” Cowell said. “But then of course you have a baby and you look at the baby and you kinda go, ‘this is what happened from it.’”

Amid all the commotion and high-profile drama, Silverman gave birth to a healthy baby boy, Eric, on Feb. 14, 2014. “My life has changed, but I am probably more focused on what I am doing now than I was a year ago,” Cowell said. “Maybe because it puts things in perspective having two people in my life who I am responsible for.”

The music mogul went on to talk about how he finally found his life partner with Silverman. “The great thing about Lauren is she loves what I do, so she sits in if I am watching ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ for example, and she has got a good opinion,” Cowell gushed. “And I seem to have got my mojo back again.”

During an interview with Hello! Magazine in 2015, Silverman talked about how she and Cowell are a great match for each other. “I think Simon has changed me,” she said. “He makes me laugh all the time. I can’t get angry with him because when I’m trying to be cross he just makes me laugh.” Aside from their happy times together, Silverman has also credited Cowell with helping her grow as a person. “I feel I learn so much from him, which is incredibly inspiring,” she explained. “He’s very talented.”

Despite their controversial start, Cowell and Silverman have stayed together for quite some time now. They have a beautiful son together, and the family seems nothing but supportive of one another. Cowell went from being viewed as one of TV’s most beloved villains to what seems like one of the most caring fathers and boyfriends anyone could ask for.
