Bullying can be an absolutely horrific experience that creates scars that last well into adulthood. Most kids would do everything in their power to avoid being bullied by their peers. After all, most kids want nothing more than to fit in with their classmates.

This is why the actions of young Christian McPhilamy of Melbourne, FL, have taken the internet by storm. This brave little boy endured terrible bullying that he could've easily stopped, but rather decided to endure for a truly heroic reason.

When Christian was six, he was watching television with his mother, Deeanna Thomas, when a commercial for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital came on the TV. The commercial featured cancer-stricken children who'd lost their hair due to chemotherapy. Despite their physical differences, Christian saw the faces of kids just like him and he wanted to do something to help.

Christian was deeply moved and asked his mother how people could help kids afflicted with cancer. His mother explained that beyond financial donations, many people donated their hair to help make wigs for kids who'd lost their own hair.

In an act of total bravery that wowed even his own mother, Christian vowed to grow his hair out to the required 12 inches needed to make a donation.

Perhaps Christian didn't realize that the whole process would take almost three years. During this time, Christian grew from a precocious six-year-old to a maturer nine-year-old. This is the era of a child's life where bullying can sadly begin to rear its ugly head.

While many people in Christian's life were supportive, many of his classmates taunted him regularly, attempting to insult him by calling him a "girl."

For many boys Christian's age, the taunting and bullying would have been too much to endure. However, Christian isn't like other boys his age. He'd made a commitment to donating his hair and he intended to follow through with that commitment, regardless of what verbal blows his classmates dealt him.

Almost three years later, Christian's bright blonde hair was finally a whopping 12 inches long. In one of the most special days of this brave young boy's life, the time finally came to chop it all off so it could be donated to make a wig for a deserving child.

Today, Christian wears his hair buzzed close to his scalp, a far cry from the long tresses he bravely wore only a short time ago. While the physical evidence of his courage might be gone, the memory will live on forever as long as we all spread his story far and wide.
