Despite 38-Year Age Gap, Couple Says It Was 'Love At First Sight'

Love comes in all shapes and sizes. Time and time again, people have proven that their love story doesn’t need to be a conventional one and that all that really matters is that they truly love and care for each other. This is exactly what a couple from Weston-super-Mare, England, has continued to prove as they celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary in July 2020.

Edna and Simon Martin first met back in 2003, tied the knot in 2005, and have been together ever since. It’s clear that they really care for each other and admire one another. However, many people don’t believe that they are actually husband and wife when they first meet them and actually mistake them for grandmother and grandson.

Edna and Simon have a 38-year age difference. They first met when Edna was 69 years old, and Simon was 45. Simon is actually around a similar age to Edna’s grandchildren. At the ages of 83 and 45, the pair were not only just going strong; they were celebrating 15 years of marriage and commitment to one another, celebrating their love for the world to see.

When they first started dating, there were some concerns, but not necessarily what most people would think. They worried about whether they were deserving of the other and only wanted to give their partner the best relationship possible. Based on the fact that they are still currently together and just as in love as ever, it seems like they were able to put their doubts aside and focus on building their long-lasting relationship.

According to the Nottingham Post, Edna and Simon first met at a concert and knew that they had something special right away. It seems not much has changed as they are still head over heels for each other. “Simon and I both think and feel that there is not enough love in this world – it’s lovely to love someone and be loved and to express that love,” Edna said. 

Simon agreed, adding, “We’re very lucky we still enjoy a marvelous physical relationship. It’s really wonderful that we can express our love publicly – not for other people, but for ourselves.” The pair said they often share a sweet kiss in the supermarket and other public displays of affection most couples would do. “It’s very rare to see a couple of any age giving each other a loving peck or showing their affection,” Simon said.

The couple hadn’t been looking for a relationship at the time but felt a spark the moment they met. “It was love at first sight,” Edna revealed. Edna’s parents had been supportive from the beginning. At first, Simon’s parents weren’t necessarily on board with him dating someone almost 40 years older than him, but they were glad he found someone.

During an appearance on “This Morning” in July 2019, the couple talked about how they first met back in 2003 and how they had some doubts about their relationship, as they wanted to make sure they were “being fair” to each other because of the age difference. Ultimately the couple moved forward with their relationship and wed on July 8, 2005, and have enjoyed each other’s love and company ever since.
