No one knows when or where they will leave their bodies behind. For many, they may leave this Earth peacefully surrounded by loved ones, while others may have to lie in hospital beds, surrounded by hospital staff.

For Laura Levis the latter was her fate. For seven days, Laura withdrew her last breaths while surrounded by the medical care she so desperately needed. However, lucky for Laura and her husband, Peter DeMarco, the staff at Boston’s CHA Cambridge Hospital understood the magnitude of their role. They played the parts of the loving family.

It is never easy for anyone to comfort the dying and the loved ones of those dying, yet the staff at Boston’s CHA Cambridge Hospital managed to do so in an effortless and truly unforgettable way.
In fact, after the departing of his dear wife, Peter took the time to pen a heartfelt letter to the entire staff, which was published in the New York Times.

At only 34 years old, Laura’s asthma attack surprised everyone; her subsequent passing was an even greater shock. For those of us who have experienced the death of a loved one, especially an untimely and shocking death, Peter’s letter resonates.

His letter begins by describing how every time he would describe all the wonderful people who helped Laura, family and friends would ask him how he could recall all their names. His answer to those people is simple, “How could I not”?

From “doctors, nurses, respiratory specialists, social workers, even cleaning staff members who cared for her” they “treated Laura with such professionalism, and kindness, and dignity as she lay unconscious.”

His letter goes on to commend them for apologizing to her when giving her shots, saying “that it was going to hurt a little.” Never knowing whether she could hear them or not, they continued to treat her with absolute respect.

Those in the hospital provided Laura with every comfort they could, such as blankets when the room grew cold. They further extended this helping hand to her visitors, often helping her elderly parents get in and out of the room’s recliner. The hospital staff even went so far as to involve Laura’s father, a doctor, in her care.

Peter’s letter goes on to describe how the staff turned a blind eye to him bringing in Laura’s beloved cat and to how the staff made arrangements for him to access computers for emergency emails.

However, the most touching part of Peter’s letters details how the staff allowed him that final goodbye with Laura. After family and friends finally left after a day of visiting, Peter had planned to sleep in the recliner beside his wife; however, staff asked him to leave the room momentarily.

When he returned, they had moved Laura to one side of the bed, providing Peter with enough room to curl up behind his wife for one final time. Check out this video for more pictures:
