JD Aument is a firefighter in the army reserve who recently was deployed overseas. His wife and family missed him, but his dog seemed to be affected the most by his absence. The dog exhibited episodes of sadness where he would look out the window, and he even cried on some occasions.

JD and his wife Rachel got their dog from a shelter when he was a puppy and named him Brindle reports The Dodo. The dog was very happy when they brought him to their Pennsylvania home. He also became good friends with Xander, the other dog that was living with the family. Xander is closer to Rachel while Brindle seems to be fonder of JD.

After JD went overseas, his wife told him about Brindle's resulting depression over missing his favorite human caretaker. JD was moved by this, so he decided to do something to cheer Brindle up.

He realized that dogs are very scent-oriented, so he decided to send home one of his shirts so that the dog would have his scent to keep him company. He didn't wash the shirt because that would remove his scent.

When Rachel gave the shirt to Brindle, he responded gleefully in recognition of his missing human companion's scent. Brindle wagged his tail and rolled around on the floor with the shirt playfully. It made Rachel emotional when she watched Brindle playing and snuggling the shirt because he had been so sad before and now he was happy again. She felt relieved that the dog felt better, and she recorded some of the dog's playful antics with the shirt.

After Brindle got the T-Shirt, he kept it with him at all times from that point onward. He continued to play with it, and he even wore it on some occasions. The dog has remained in a much better mood ever since.

JD was only away for a short time. When he returned home, his family was happy to see him again, and Brindle was especially overjoyed to once again be reunited with his favorite human caretaker.
