In 2011, reality TV star Denise Richards made the life-changing decision to adopt an infant daughter, Eloise Joni Richards. Embracing her role as a single mother, Denise was determined to provide Eloise with a loving home.
In 2016, Eloise was diagnosed with a rare chromosomal disorder – specifically a deletion in chromosome 8. This condition affected Eloise’s ability to speak and led to a range of developmental delays.
In 2017, Denise began dating Aaron Phypers, and their connection grew quickly. They married in a private Malibu ceremony in September 2018. A year later, Phypers formally adopted Eloise, solidifying his role as a loving father to Denise’s daughter and becoming an integral part of their family.
In February 2019, Denise acknowledged the difficulties Eloise faced growing up and revealed the challenges of raising a child with special needs.
Denise said she first noticed that Eloise wasn’t reaching typical milestones for babies and explained that the chromosomal disorder “has caused a lot of developmental delays for her.”
“She wasn’t able to sit up on her own for a very long time, and she didn’t start walking until she was 2, and that was with physical therapy,” she continued.
In 2025, Denise opened up about her daughter again, reflecting on how Eloise has deeply touched her family. The actress stated that raising her daughter has been “the best” and called her a “bright light.”

In an interview with PEOPLE, the former “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” star praised her daughters, Sami Sheen and Lola Sheen, whom she shares with ex-husband Charlie Sheen, describing them as “amazing” when it comes to connecting with their younger sister, Eloise.
“They feel that I had her, that’s their sister. So they have a wonderful relationship with her,” she said.
According to Denise, Eloise has taught the entire family to “stop and smell the roses” and appreciate “the simplest things” in life.
“She just loves everything, and she just embraces it and is just so happy,” Denise gushed.
“And the older girls see it too, and sometimes if they go at each other, (Eloise will) just be like... And I’m like, ‘I know.’ And then they laugh, and then they can kind of get past whatever stupid thing they’re fighting about,” she added.
Meanwhile, Sami said that she and Eloise are “best friends.”
“I like to do our makeup and we played tennis not too long ago, and we like to go shopping,” she shared, adding Eloise “likes to babysit all my animals for me. We get our nails done together too. We do everything together.”
Denise described Eloise as a blessing sent “from God,” adding, “she’s an angel.”
However, when Eloise was younger, Denise wasn’t sure how her diagnosis would affect their lives. She revealed:
“Early on, we thought she would be talking, but she is primarily considered nonverbal. She’s very aware of certain dynamics and situations.”
Richards then described Eloise’s character:
“She’s very observant. She understands everything. And it was a very challenging situation with her trying to figure out what was really going on with her. It was hard.”
As Denise continues to raise Eloise, the doting mother said she remains grateful for all the new milestones in her daughter’s journey. She also has the support of her husband, Phypers. He explained:
“It wasn’t even a decision. It is just is.”
He then described Eloise as “a sweetheart.”
“I love her. I think of her as my own,” he shared.
