Dementia Patient Receives Unlikely Comfort from Daughter's Previously Neglected Foster Dog

Louis began his story as a young pup dropped off at the Michigan Humane Society. While we are unsure of his exact past story, we do know that our little Louis had not been the recipient of great care or treatment. Instead, his hair was badly matted, so much so that the Humane Society had to shave it all off.

Even more, during his stay, Louis not only showed physical signs of neglect but he also showed behavioral issues, too. He seemed starved for warmth and affection, and those who worked with Louis surmised that under that mass of hair, Louis had been in dire need of touch—gentle, loving touch.

This is where Mandy Looney shows up. Upon seeing Louis in a state of suffering, she courageously took him in to foster. What Mandy was not expecting was just how much this little dog would change the entire atmosphere of her home.

Almost immediately upon seeing this tiny dog walk through the door, Mandy's dad, Joe, fell in love. With four other large dogs in the home, Mandy had not foreseen the bond that would develop between her dad and her new foster dog.

Much like Louis, Joe, too, was suffering. Unfortunately, he had been dealing with dementia, and Mandy had been providing his care. Like clockwork, Joe seemed to grow disoriented every day around 3:30, but once Louis arrived, Joe seemed to find a balm for his agitation in holding Louis in his lap. Of course, Lois didn't mind all the loving petting he received at 3:30 every day.

Louis provided steady comfort for Joe during his bouts of confusion, but Louis wasn't only giving. Instead, Louis found the love and comfort he had been searching for. While he quickly settled in with his new owners and his new home, he more importantly found his best friend and soulmate in Joe. He calmed Joe, and Joe calmed him, helping Louis deal with his earlier behavioral issues.

With such a bond in the house, how could Mandy Looney not adopt her foster pup? Like Mandy said, dealing with dementia is never easy, and it is certainly a journey where each family must find their own way; and for the Looney's, Louis is helping provide that way for them.
