Delivery Driver's Arrest Leads Cop To Complete Food Order

Although it surely wasn’t the intention behind the product, doorbell cameras are proving to be a treasure trove for viral content. From thoughtful delivery drivers to flagrant mail thieves, these technological wonders are capturing previously unseen moments.

That was certainly the case for Sioux Falls, South Dakota, resident Anastasia Elsinger, whose doorbell camera captured footage of an unlikely food delivery man — a police officer.

Before Elsinger answered the door, she ordered a meal via DoorDash, the popular food delivery service. But moments before her food arrived, she noticed that her DoorDash driver had stopped a few blocks away from her home. When Elsinger took a look outside, she saw police lights flashing in the distance.

"I stepped outside and I saw the lights and everything," Elsinger told the Sioux Falls Argus Leader. "So I was like, 'Oh yes, my food's gonna take a while, whatever.'"

Elinsger made peace with the eventuality that her food wouldn’t arrive at all and went inside.

But then her doorbell rang. It was a police officer holding her food.

"I definitely did not expect to have a cop show up at my door," Elsinger told the Argus Leader. "He just said, like, 'I know, I'm not who you're expecting but your DoorDash driver got arrested for some things they didn't take care of.'"

The officer, Sam Buhr, decided he would deliver the food since Elsinger’s delivery driver had been arrested.

"We had a report of an officer who was moonlighting as a DoorDash employee while on duty," said Sam Clemens, a police spokesperson.

"This isn't normal by any stretch, but the little things like this going above and beyond helping people out — that's the things that we do," Clemens added.

Elsinger’s video of the incident, captured on her Ring doorbell camera, has accumulated more than 10 million views on TikTok.

"There's so much negativity in the world right now and this is just something that's so funny and so happy that I was like, 'more people need to see this. This is hilarious,'" Elsinger said of the video in an interview with CNN.

Elsinger also told the outlet that she got an opportunity to thank Buhr after getting in touch with his sister.

Most viewers online found that the video showed the officer in a positive light.

“HE didnt have to do this.... this is a service to the community, and something that makes this city great!” one YouTuber wrote in response to a reupload of the clip.

“This is FANTASTIC!! Any good & NORMAL person would smile and feel good about this,” another user wrote.

However, not everyone found the video funny or uplifting.

“I absolutely love how they are laughing hysterically about the dude going to jail,” a viewer wrote, criticizing Elsinger and Buhr’s reaction.

Clemens, the police department’s spokesperson, said that the DoorDash driver was arrested for an unspecified crime, according to the Sioux Falls Argus Leader.

This isn’t the first time that DoorDash has been in the news thanks to a doorbell camera. In December 2020, the company made headlines when a furious driver took back her food delivery because the customer didn’t tip enough.
