It might be a bit too early for Halloween, but Therese Merkel of Wisconsin was still ready to dress up. She was willing to wear a bush suit to hide as she filmed her sister’s surprise engagement.
Therese, 23, is a loving sister to Rachel, 24. So when Rachel’s boyfriend Andrew asked her for a favor she gladly obliged. Andrew wanted to propose to Rachel and took about a month to plan it with Therese in advance.
“We had an hour-long phone call where he asked for my approval to be wed and then come up with something great for this huge moment,” she told People. “Me and my sister are incredibly close, so I’m like the second string of parents he has to go through. We didn’t make it easy.”

After tossing around some ideas of how she could surreptitiously film the proposal, they came up with a crazy concept of dressing up as a bush. They ended up taking the cartoonish idea seriously and Andrew ordered his future sister-in-law a ghillie suit, typically used for camoflauging hunters.
The location was set for Picnic Point in Madison, and Andrew went all out in decorating the romantic spot with lanterns and sunflowers. Therese was in position to film the big moment and jumped up saying “she said yes!” after crouching for about 15 minutes once it happened.
The magical moment is now immortalized on film thanks to the perfectly executed plan and the newly-engaged couple also got to have a surprise party with family afterward. The sisters posted the special story on social media and it quickly went viral.
“Maybe it’s not even the fact that I was a bush that went viral — it may just be the warmth people feel when they know how far a sister-sister duo will go for each other,” Therese said to People.
