Dear Dads: Just Because You're Done With Work Doesn't Mean Your Day Is Over

For a working parent, it seems like the days are never end. But gone are the days when Mom was expected to take care of the kids and the home while Dad earned a living. Moms are now having careers of their own, and it's time for Dads to step up to the plate to be an equal partner.

Even if your wife stays at home with the kids all day, it isn't likely that you come home to find her on the couch watching television after a long day. Instead, she's probably busy preparing dinner, helping kids with homework, running children to sport practice, getting kids ready for bed, doing the dishes, or doing the laundry. So, when you come home eager to discuss your day with her, don't be surprised if she's preoccupied. Your wish to stop and chat just makes her realize how much she needs to get done before the end of the night.

This can be the cause of tension between many couples. While you're each off doing separate things during the day, it's important to come together each evening as parents. Not to discuss the day's events, but instead to work as a team to get things done at home. For some reason, men are more inclined to work in different areas of the home, doing yard work outside and other general maintenance tasks. But, they seem to have a different attitude towards housework.

You may think you've had a hard day at the office, but it's important to remember that what she's doing all day matters too. If you take turns watching your children alone for long periods of time, think about how you relieved you feel when your wife returns home to help you out. That's why it's important for you to help pick up the slack around the house as well.

No matter what you have going on at work, come home and show your wife that your day isn't over yet either. Make small talk about your day and then get busy helping her finish hers.
