Deaf Woman And Mother-In-Law Don't Know Ellen Is Aware Of Their Situation And Are Taken Aback By Her Gesture

It's likely that you don't fully appreciate your sense of hearing. You probably never think about those who are unable to hear or those who have some difficulty hearing, because the sense is so second-nature to you that you never give it a passing thought.

This story from 2011 gives a glimpse of what not being able to hear might feel like. Then 34-year-old, Sarah Churman, both a wife and a mother, was born deaf and hadn't heard a single sound in her life. After finding out about new hearing implants that would enable her to hear, albeit with a hefty price tag attached, Sarah's mother-in-law wanted to foot the bill for one of the implants, but she couldn't afford both. Then the surprise of a lifetime happened when they appeared on The Ellen Show. 

Until recent days, Sarah Churman, both a wife and a mother, had no ability to hear. She was born deaf and had gone through 34 years of life without hearing a single noise. She never got to hear her husband tell her that he loves her, or hear her children speak.

Sarah desperately longed to hear the sound of her children’s laughter or to hear the sounds of nature such as a bird’s chirp. When she discovered a new implant that was being admitted by doctors, she knew that it was worth a try. Sadly, the new implant had a large price tag that was out of Sarah’s budget.

The technology cost $30,000 per ear, and purchasing even just one was something that she was unable to afford. Even though she and her husband stayed up many nights trying to figure out how they could make things work, there was no way these implants were in their budget.

Their loved ones were aware of their financial status but were blown away at the kind gesture of one special person. Sarah’s mother-in-law stepped in and decided that she wanted to help purchase one of these implants for her.

She wanted to take money out of her retirement fund in order to purchase the technology so Sarah would be able to hear her children speak and laugh.

Sarah appeared on the show, although she was nervous and scared to share her innermost thoughts about being deaf with the public and the audience. But Sarah was unaware that she was about to receive the gift of a lifetime from Ellen, and was shocked when the reveal was made.

The mother-in-law made a plan to withdraw the money in order to get Sarah her implant. Although she was unable to give the money for two, everyone knew that one implant was better than none, and the plan was set in place.

However, something amazing happened when talk show host Ellen DeGeneres learned of Sarah’s story. She knew that this guest was someone that people could learn a lot from, and she invited her on the show to discuss her hardships.
