Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard are two American actors who have been in a relationship since 2009. The couple got married in 2013, and their wedding ceremony may surprise you. As celebrities, Bell and Shepard didn’t want all the glitz and glamour, so they went with something much more understated. What matters is that they dedicated their lives to one another and have been together since. They have two daughters, Lincoln and Delta.

Bell was born July 18, 1980, in Huntington Woods, Michigan. She attended Shrine Catholic High School in Royal Oak, Michigan, and performed in several plays throughout her time there. After graduation, Bell attended New York University's Tisch School of the Arts but left before receiving her degree because she was cast in a Broadway production. Her career took off when she was cast in the lead role on “Veronica Mars.” The series is still what she is most known for.

Shepard was born in Highland Township, Michigan, on Jan. 2, 1975. From the time he was 14 until he graduated high school, Shepard worked for his mother, who managed publicity events for General Motors. He got to go on the road with his mom and visit racetracks. Shepard attended Santa Monica College and West Los Angeles College before transferring to UCLA, where he got his bachelor's degree in anthropology. He got his big break working on the show “Punk’d” with Ashton Kutcher.

One thing about both Bell and Shepard is that they have been very open and honest about their personal struggles. Shepard shared that he is a recovering addict and his wife has been supportive. However, there were still challenges along the way. Shepard opened up on "The Drew Barrymore Show" in Nov. 2021:

"My wife's incredibly confident, as she should be. There was a ton of jealousy at the beginning of the relationship, for pretty good reasons. I had been in an open relationship for nine years. I was blacked out for a big chunk of my life. You know, there were a lot of things for her to be concerned about."

Bell also spoke about her own insecurities at the start of their relationship:

"In the beginning, it was nerve-wracking dating Dax knowing his history of recovery and he's just this big force, but I was like, no, he's got it inside of him. He's got all this goodness. And I have been proven right," she said.

The couple wants others to know that love takes work and that it isn’t always simple. Shepard said during an appearance on "Sunday Today with Willie Geist," as reported by People, "We don't want anyone to think we met and it's been easy 'cause if that's someone's expectation of a relationship and certainly a marriage, it's a bad expectation to have.” Bell and Shepard mentioned that they have attended couple’s therapy in the past and found it to be helpful. Bell opened up to People in another interview:

"Every couple of years, we're like, 'We're being very antagonistic towards each other,' and we don't want that. We go back to therapy and figure out what I'm not doing that’s best for you and what you're not doing that's best for me, and how we can serve this team goal better. It's been incredibly helpful."

When the couple decided to get married, they were thrilled to devote their lives to one another. However, they did it the non-traditional way. Shepard told The Knot:

“We did not want a wedding. We spent a hundred bucks at the courthouse. The last thing we wanted to do was take something and add stress — Who’s invited? What’s for dinner? — since we’d rather buy a family member a house.”

Bell shared that the cost of the entire event was incredibly low.

“The total was $147 and I believe that included the gas in the car and the playlist. He bought all of my favorite songs from high school on to play in the car on the way there and those $1.99 single tracks, the total for the day was $147,” she said.

If they had registered for gifts, Bell said she would not have gone overboard. The actress revealed:

“I would say, practically, I would want to register for anything that caught my eye because I am especially susceptible to impulse buying. I would make a list ahead of time and pick the 25 most practical items that I needed like pans or light bulbs. I know it’s not sexy to put light bulbs on your registry, but you need light bulbs!”

Even though they decided to get married at a courthouse, Bell says she still has fun at weddings. She added:

“I enjoy watching the vows. I’m still taken with public promises. We’ve been to a few weddings of friends who’ve wanted a big ceremony, and their vows have been breathtaking to witness — the public promise of marriage to one another. Even when I don’t know a couple that well, it’s still somehow moving.”

The couple has been married for eight years and together they have two daughters — Lincoln Bell Shepard, 9, and Delta Bell Shepard, 7. They've even carried over the no-nonsense approach they have in their marriage to parenthood. Bell and Shepard revealed one parenting strategy that they use is to wait it out when their daughters are throwing tantrums before they start talking to them as a way of discipline. “We wait until they calm down and then we talk to them,” said the mom of two.

The couple also has a rule when it comes to arguing in the presence of their daughters: They would make up in front of them, too. According to HuffPost, during an episode of The Motherly Podcast that was released in March 2020, Bell revealed that Shepard made her promise that they would always say sorry to each other and reconcile in front of the girls. “He said, ‘Let’s make a deal that if we ever make up when we’re behind closed doors, that we role-play the next morning,’” the actress said during her appearance on the podcast.

"So every time we’re testy with each other, the next morning I say, ‘Good morning, Daddy. Hey, I just wanted to say last night, I had a really long day and I’m sorry I snapped at you about not having the dinner that you wanted or not having this.’ And he would say, ‘Yeah, you’re right, Mommy. I had a hard day too and I’m really sorry.’”

She added that her husband and she would then proceed to kiss and hug if the children are within earshot. The couple's low-key approach to marriage and parenting speaks a lot to how they are as people and makes their relationship more relatable than the average celebrity one.
