Canadian musician David Foster has a long list of accomplishments to be proud of. Over almost five decades in the music industry, he has won 16 Grammy Awards and has been nominated 47 times.
He started his music career as a keyboardist in the pop group Skylark in the early 1970s. After the band broke up, he remained in Los Angeles, playing, composing and recording music with legends like Kenny Loggins and Neil Young. In total, he's worked with some of the biggest names in the music industry including Celine Dion, Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban and more.
Over the course of his career, Foster has held many different titles, working as a record producer, composer, arranger and music executive. At 72 years old, he’s gained another title — father of six.
In 2019, Foster married 38-year-old singer and actress Katharine McPhee. Fans and loved ones of the two stars were hardly surprised by their marriage, as the two had been dating since 2006 when Foster was McPhee’s mentor on ABC’s hit show “American Idol.”
The pair got married in June 2019. Bravo TV reported that the extravagant ceremony was beautiful and romantic. The wedding was held at the Armenian Church of St. Yeghiche in London.
One year later, the pair was seen in Montecito, California shopping for baby items together, which sparked questions about a potential pregnancy. In Feb. 2021, their son Rennie was born, officially making Foster a father of six.
In addition to Rennie, Foster has five daughters from four previous marriages — Alison, 51, Amy, 48, Sara, 41, Erin, 39 and Jordan, 35.

Foster's children are supportive of their father and his relationship with McPhee. When the pair scheduled their wedding, Foster’s daughters Sara and Erin told US Weekly that they were excited for their father.
“We are making it clear that we love Katharine,” the sisters said. They also said in the interview that they expected the pair to begin trying for a child and “fully support it.” Erin went on to say that though she’s heard negative comments about their father’s relationship, she wanted to make it clear that she has nothing but love and respect for McPhee.
“It takes a very strong, graceful person to come into a family as the fifth wife and have adult daughters who are older than her and do it in a way that really creates inclusion with the family, and she just does it effortlessly,” she said. “She just makes it really easy for all of us to get along. So we’re very grateful for her.”
Now baby Rennie is nearly 1 year old. In an interview with Yahoo! News, Foster said he couldn’t be happier about the birth of his son. "It's just great being a dad," he said. The music mogul said now that he’s older and his other children can take care of themselves, he has more time to dedicate to his only son.
"It's too cliché to say 'Now I have more time,' but I do: I have more time,” Foster said. “Without any reflection on any of my other children, whom I all love equally, and equally as much as my son."

At this point in his career, Foster prefers to keep his private life just that — private. Even so, McPhee will occasionally share photos and updates about the new family unit on her Instagram. Since her son’s birth, she’s occasionally shared heartwarming photos of their adventures together. In May 2021, she shared a photo of Foster holding baby Rennie as he stood on piano keys. One month later, she posted a photo of herself holding Rennie and posing next to a designer dress, purse and shoes.
This desire for privacy likely stems from Foster’s recent transition into the public eye. Though he’s worked with iconic artists like Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston, he has largely remained in the background. All of that changed when he became a mentor on "American Idol," and since then, fans have followed as he’s toured around the world.
Now that Rennie is no longer a newborn, McPhee has joined Foster on his tours. Foster said that he loves seeing McPhee on stage with him, and joked in an interview with Yahoo! News that the crowd likes her more than him.
"When she comes out, she gets such thunders of applause," Foster said. “I love it. I love having her with me.”
Even when the pandemic prevented Foster from touring, it didn’t stop the pair from performing together. They began a YouTube series in March 2020 that they called “The Kat & Dave Show.” In the series, the couple performed original songs and covers together. The series included 22 episodes in total and ended in April of that same year.
If this adorable couple proves one thing, it’s that true love conquers all, no matter what.
