David Flood On Why Love Is The Best - And Only - Way To Communicate

Dec 24, 2018 by apost team

David Flood, an inspirational speaker, shares a heartwarming tale of how he learned a life-changing lesson from watching his son's hockey team.

Flood points out that it's difficult for a person to look at someone else and see themselves in them.

He shares that this lack of visualization makes it hard for us to find ourselves in other people and figure out where we fit into certain social situations.

His son, Justin, has autism. He often doesn't see how he can fit in. When he was in middle school, Justin would come home and share that he ate alone.

When pointing out how Justin eats alone, Flood shares that there's a difference between being alone and being lonely.

Just as Justin may be alone at the moment, it doesn't mean he's lonely. Being by one's self isn't the same as feeling the toxic isolation of loneliness. Flood learned the real difference between these two in a lesson from his son.

Five years ago, Justin began to skate. He was invited to play on a rec team with other kids and jumped at the chance to show off his skating skills.

Justin's team was losing. The game wasn't close but there were three minutes left. During a face-off, Justin gets the puck

Justin skated in, taking a soft shot at the puck and watched the puck rebound and rushed it into the goal. The whole team and crowd went wild!

Flood shares how he was moved to tears. He went to thank the opposing team's coach, but the coach responded by saying, "Don't thank me, thank the boys."

The boys, all 10 and 11 years old, were kind enough to let Justin score a goal. These boys, in their moment of kindness, had no idea just how much this would impact Justin's father's day

What Flood took away from the game was that our life isn't about us. It's about the people that are around us.

Our lives are about the people we can see, the people we can touch, and the people that we can impact.

Our lives are about the people that love us and the people that we love.

Just like the students from the game, Flood shares that we should live our life like it matters to others and that is what will change everything.
