His most notable role was as Keith Partridge in the 1970s musical sitcom “The Partridge Family.” With the success of the show and an overwhelming amount of fans, Cassidy easily progressed into a broader world of entertainment and went on to become a beloved teen idol.

Born on April 12, 1950, in New York City, Cassidy went on to become well known and loved by many people all across the world thanks to his outstanding work in the entertainment industry. In 1969, Cassidy made his professional Broadway debut before making the jump and moving across the country to Los Angeles. There, he landed the role of a lifetime, and went on to star in the highly successful series “The Partridge Family.” Fans admired his abilities to both sing and act so well.

While his life on television and his life as a performer seemed to be an absolute dream, Cassidy was struggling behind the scenes. During the later years of his life, he realized he was struggling with dementia and some other health issues.

The Importance Of Family

Born to parents who were both in the entertainment industry, it’s no surprise that Cassidy followed in their footsteps during his remarkable life and chose a similar career path. His father, Jack Cassidy, was a singer and actor, while his mother, Evelyn Ward, was an actress. Speaking with the Guardian, Cassidy explained that both of his parents were supportive of his career, although they wanted him to prioritize school.

In 1970, Cassidy went on to land the role of Keith Partridge in the musical-sitcom “The Partridge Family,” changing his life for the better. The role quickly brought on more fame and success for the star, helping him become a true idol as he gained more and more popularity.

However, life behind the scenes wasn’t always as glamorous. He struggled with substance abuse issues and also had a strained relationship with his parents. On top of that, dementia ran in the star’s family, as both his mother and his grandfather had it, according to People. During the later years of his life, he revealed that he also had been suffering from this memory loss disease.

Prior to this, Cassidy had begun doing his part to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s and dementia, especially after realizing how severe his mother’s dementia was. “I’ve decided to dedicate a lot of my energy to try to raise awareness, educate and raise money for dementia care,” he told the Guardian in 2012. “Caregivers are my heroes now and I want to do my part to help.” The star had also worked alongside the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.

His Hopeful Last Years

Cassidy had been in denial about his own dementia after seeing both his mother and grandfather battle the disease, according to People. Back in 2016, Cassidy had talked about his mother, who passed away in 2012 at the age of 89. “In the end, the only way I knew she recognized me is with one single tear that would drop from her eye every time I walked into the room,” he said. “I feared I would end up that way.”

Even though Cassidy ended up getting diagnosed with dementia, he didn’t spend too much time dwelling on the diagnosis, according to People. Before his death on Nov. 21, 2017, the successful actor and singer chose to focus on what really mattered to him: his friends, family and fans.

Cassidy had told People:

“In the end, I just want to be happy. I really want to be happy. If I want to have a great life like I have now, I’ve got to just stay on track. I love that I’ve had an amazing life that has touched millions of people all over the world. I’m flattered. The world needs more kindness.”

The star had always been grateful for his loved ones and for the endless support and loyalty from his adoring fans who stuck by him over the course of many years. “I’m kind of in awe of them,” he told People. “Truly. To be that connected and supportive of someone it’s a very beautiful and emotional thing for me… everything, it has more meaning.”
