Harris explained how he was “hoping the stars would align,” as he frequently saw Burtka while out and about. “There’s something kinetic about him and his being,” Harris explained.

The actor said he and Burtka took “baby steps” to get to this point in their relationship, and once they started talking, they “never stopped.” They even discussed the possibility of having children during their time working together on “How I Met Your Mother.” While they share many common interests and similarities, the two have also learned to thrive off their differences.

For Burtka, their relationship means just as much to him as it does to Harris. “I’ve always known I was going to have a monogamous relationship, raise children and be happy in love,” he said. “It was the one thing in life that I never doubted for a second.” Burtka talked about the first stages of his relationship with Harris, as they two became friends while Burtka was ending a previous relationship.

Nowadays, the pair are happily in love. Burtka said, “We are, in a way, very codependent. He’s my lifeline, in an amazing way. Without him, I can’t breathe.” He admitted that their relationship isn’t perfect, but they have more good times than bad and have learned to go with the changes. “We’re not trying to pretend that we are perfect,” Burtka said. “We’re just trying – in a good, positive, loving way – to live our lives.”

Harris added, “We’re in this for a major long haul.”
