David Archuleta is quiet no more, and his rendition of the song “Prayer” shows why he was such a fan favorite on American Idol.

The beautiful song, originally created as a collaboration between Celine Dion, David Foster, and Andrea Bocelli. But this version is arguably even better than the original.

David’s sincere, melodious voice truly sings the lyrics as a genuine prayer. He also made the smart decision to keep everything about the music simple, letting the song take center stage. He chose his good friend Nathan Pacheco to sing the duet with him. The two men’s voices are perfectly suited to one another.

For instrumentals there is only a piano and a cello. Yes these four plain elements – two voices, two strings, meld to form a hypnotizing performance. They don’t blast any of the notes, even at the end, reinforcing the intensity and delicacy of the lyrics as prayer. Their sincerity is obvious throughout the video.

The video itself stays true to the ‘less is more’ production value. It focuses on David, Nathan, the pianist, and the cellist. The camera angles vary and each image melds into the next, just as the notes and lyrics meld together. The effect is magical.

David and Nathan’s voice ranges are incredibly, and they hit each not clearly, allowing just the right amount of vibrato when needed. Their movements are controlled, as if they are holding back great emotion that would overwhelm them and the song if they let it loose.

Interestingly, though they stand in the same room singing, they stand far apart from each other. This also prevents the performance from becoming a ’show’ in which they are the main focus. It keeps the viewer’s mind on the music. Their understated movements reflect the intensity of emotion for the prayer while again letting the song speak for itself. If they had been more elaborate or choreographed, it would have taken away from the beauty of the song.

David Archuleta fans love this performance for good reason, and Nathan Pacheco, though less well known, is obviously a singer to watch. To see these two men performing ‘The Prayer’ in perfect harmony, feast your eyes on the video.
