Losing someone you love is never easy. In addition to the sorrow that comes with never seeing your special someone again, you are left with a hole in your heart, never feeling the same way again.

Singer Tonni Tennille knows that pain all too well. Tonni is better known to audiences the world over as half of the pop rock duo Captain and Tennille. Tennille joined her husband, “Captain” Daryl Dragon, in regaling fans with hits such as “Muskrat Love” and “Do That to Me One More Time” throughout the 70s.

The duo even won a Grammy for their hit “Love Will Keep Us Together” and hosted their own television variety show from 1976 to 1977.

Despite their stellar career, not all love stories end the way you expect them to, and Tonni and Daryl divorced in 2014, having been married 40 years. Even though they divorced, the duo remained very close to one another. After Daryl began having kidney problems, Tonni moved back to their home in Arizona to help care for her ex-husband. Still caring for Daryl deeply, Tonni was with him when he died in hospice care in Prescott, Arizona. In a statement released following Daryl’s death, Tonni praised her former singing partner. Saying that she was at the height of her creativity when she partnered with Daryl, Tonni told fans of how Daryl had a great rapport with his many friends and was a brilliant musician.

Daryl dedicated his entire life to music. The son of two musicians, composer Carmen Dragon and singer Eloise Dragon, Daryl received a strong musical education from a young age.

One of Dragon’s first jobs as a performer was keyboard player for the Beach Boys. It was with the Beach Boys that Daryl earned his nickname “Captain,” which was given to him by the band’s lead singer, Mike Love, due to Daryl’s habit of wearing nautically themed hats.

Daryl would meet Tonni during an audition for a musical in 1972. Realizing that they had a strong connection, Daryl and Tonni quickly formed Captain and Tennille and fell in love. During their performances, Daryl would often serve as a foil Tonni.

While Tonni was active and outgoing, Daryl calmly played the keyboard, content to give his wife the spotlight.
