What would be your reaction if you saw a cat stranded in freezing water? While some people would just walk away, Darden Schurg from Hobart, Indiana knew that the best thing to do would be to dive in, with nothing on but his boxer shorts and save the cat.

The video of this daring wrestler first appeared on Facebook in December of 2018 when Hilda Schurg, Darden’s sister-in-law shared it for everyone to see. In the video, Darden dives into the freezing cold water with only a pair of black boxer shorts.

Darden, then 21, is a wrestler at Wabash College in Indiana. He came out on top in the Division III 174-pound weight class. The wrestler visited his father in Hobart in Indiana when he noticed a cat walking on freezing ice-covered Lake George. On that day, Darden and Hilda were in the yard relaxing when they saw the cat fall in. From the look of things, the cat did not have the energy to swim out, reports CBS Chicago.

Hilda saw the cat first and started shouting that the cat needed help. That was when Darden ignored the cold, stripped, and swam towards the cat. He swam with professional speed as Hilda cheered him on up to where the cat was and carried it to the other side of the lake. From where he was to the cat, Darden had to swim 50 yards. When he got to the cat, it was almost sinking with its head bobbing on the surface of the water.

Before Darden jumped into the icy water, his elder brother had tried rescuing the cat, but he couldn’t bring himself to jump into the cold water. He notes that he knew what he had to do, but the condition of the water kept him off the rescue mission. Instead, he let his younger brother do it for the cat and Darden took the moment. Darden knew the lake. He had grown there and swam there many times, and he knew what he was doing.

The water in the backyard is not deep. However, it is still not a good spot to dive for an inexperienced swimmer, seeing that an Indianapolis man died in the lake trying to rescue his dog in an icy pond. After the death of the man in a 15 feet deep pond, the dog swam out and survived. Darden did not have such a fate as he knew the water and he is a good swimmer. He was able to save the cat and swim out even as the temperature of the water was so low.

The video of Darden saving the cat is popular online with more than 50,000 views. The video has also seen more than 900 shares as people love the heroism and the courage that Darden showed to save the cat. Before Darden had dived in to save the cat, it was evident that it would not have made it to the shore as it tried in vain to swim to the other side. People who saw the video thought Darden was a superhero and thanked him for saving the cat. The comments are full of praises for the man of the day. Darden was happy that he could save the cat, and he hopes the cat will make a full recovery after that ordeal.
