Dad Struggling For His Life Just 3 Days After Getting A Haircut From A Salon

Almost everyone enjoys the sensation and experience of sitting down in a comfortable salon chair and treating themselves to a haircut or styling session. We tend to associate this time as a treat to ourselves, or it could be a regular addition to our routines for grooming. Getting our hair washed by another person is a lovely gentle massage so comforting that we might even fall asleep during it!

Unfortunately, some salon experiences can have an unfortunate ending. One dad is sharing his heartbreaking story after receiving a haircut from a salon. His problem started three days after getting the treatment. Out of nowhere, the right side of the father’s body became numb and he suddenly collapsed. The father, a 45-year-old man named Dave Tyler, was in for a shocking surprise when he visited the hospital.

Tyler was diagnosed with a stroke after being seen by doctors. The stroke was caused by a blood clot, but how he received the blood clot that caused his problem was the surprising concern. The doctors informed him that he had received this blood clot from tilting his head too far back while getting his hair washed at the salon. The uncomfortable angle caused an injury to his neck, which formed the blood clot.

You may believe this was a rare experience, but these types of experiences were given a name in 1993 with the term “Beauty Salon Stroke Syndrome.” As recent as last year, a woman from Great Britain received the same diagnosis as Tyler from the same type of salon treatment, meaning that his case is not an isolated incident.

Your blood flow can be restricted when your head and neck are tilted into the angle of the salon chair and washing bowl. A correct angle would be around 15 degrees in order to avoid a stroke and blood clot. People who are elderly, have arthritis in their necks, or have prior experience with low blood flow to the brain are those at higher risk from this phenomenon. Next time you visit a salon for a hair wash, cut, or styling, be cautious as to make sure your neck and head are supported properly.

As for Tyler’s case, he won a lawsuit against the popular salon which awarded him $113,000. However, he still struggles with balancing. He is unable to drive a car safely, even though it has been six long years since the accident. Tyler now warns others through his experience. He speaks out and believes that salons should be placing towels underneath the heads of clients and providing them with pillows for better neck angles.

Tyler does his best to warn hairdressers about his condition and the unique syndrome. He lives to remind others through his story that you need to be careful about your head and neck placement during visits to your salon.
