Being the parent of a premature child can be nerve racking, a fact that is well-known by David Caldwell. David is the father of Zane, his baby boy who was born 10 weeks premature.
Each day, it breaks the hearts of David and his fiancé, Renata Freydin, to see their prized child in the NICU of St. Peter’s University Hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Despite their cares, David and Renata rest assured in the knowledge that the staff at St. Peter’s Hospital cares greatly for their child. After all, one of the nurses had already cared for David himself.

One day, while visiting baby Zane, David and Renata got into a discussion over who they thought the little one resembled more. Like all proud fathers, David insisted that his son bore a striking resemblance to himself. Intent on proving how right he was, David went back home to look for his own baby pictures to show Renata just how closely little Zane resembled his daddy at that age. It was as David looked through his baby photos that he made a startling discovery.

Like Zane, David was born premature and, also like Zane, he was treated at St. Peter’s University Hospital. As David flipped through the photos, he saw that Zane’s nurse, Lissa McGowan, is the same nurse that took care of him over 30 years ago in 1986. Astounded by the coincidence, Renata posted the news to Facebook, where it shot to viral fame and was soon covered by the mainstream media.

In an interview with CBS News, Nurse McGowan says that she has been taking care of premature babies at the NICU in St. Peter’s Hospital for 38 years. Talking with reporters, Nurse McGowan says that when speaking to new parents, she always tells them that while she is sorry that they have to be in the NICU, she is thankful for the opportunity to help them. Nurse McGowan further says that her meeting with David and his family after taking care of him 30 years ago is fate, an assessment shared by David and Renata.
Renata told reporters with CBS News that David lost his mother as a teenager. Before she died, David’s mom told him of the kindness Nurse McGowan showed to him as a baby. Looking back, David and Renata feel that they have an angel guarding Zane now that Nurse McGowan is caring for their young one.
