Dad Helps His Little Girl Celebrate Her Eighth Birthday With Mermaid-Themed Photoshoot

It’s not often you see a full-grown man posing in a pink mermaid suit. But when 8-year-old Arkansas resident Aspen told her family that she wanted to be a mermaid for her birthday this year, not only did Aspen’s grandmother set up a mermaid-themed photoshoot with Desirae Deal of Desirae Deal Photography, but her dad Michael also decided to suit up and become a magical sea creature for a day. And the results, as you can imagine, are wonderful.
How did photographer Desirae Deal manage to get Aspen’s dad to wear a pink mermaid tail? Well, it turns out she just asked. The story behind Aspen and Michael’s adorable photoshoot, which has since spread across the internet, begins with Aspen’s eighth birthday wish earlier this year. Aspen wanted to be a mermaid. While it isn’t easy to transform into a mythical sea creature overnight, Aspen’s grandmother had an idea, as Cafe Mom reports. She decided to book a mermaid-themed photoshoot with Desirae Deal, a photographer based in the Lamar, Arkansas area.
But when Aspen and her father arrived for the shoot, Deal had a better idea. In an interview with apost.com, Deal explained that all she had to do was ask.

“Well, the little girl asked her dad to get in the water and play with her. I mentioned that I had a tail that would probably fit him, and she insisted after that,” Deal told apost.com.
“He had absolutely no problem with it, he just wanted her to have a great birthday,” Deal added.
As you can imagine, the photos are amazing. In this case, a picture really is worth a thousand words — and we can’t really do them justice with a simple description — but as you’ll see every photo is simultaneously adorable, heartfelt, funny, and even a bit magical. It’s no wonder then that Deal’s photos have garnered widespread attention online and in the media. At the time of writing, Desirae Deal Photography’s Facebook post of the photoshoot has over 30 thousand likes, 30 thousand comments, and a whopping 167 thousand shares.
But Deal also emphasized that Aspen and Michael’s photoshoot demonstrates something even more profound — the importance of love and good parenting.
"Childhood is so fleeting. It's gone so fast," she told Cafe Mom. "That might sound simple, but I think it is the little things that we show them (through love) day in and day out that have the biggest impact on their core values. If a child knows love, they in turn give love, and I think the world could use a lot more of that."
