Dad-Daughter Duo Takes Internet By Storm As They Belt Out Impressive Country Duet

May 14, 2021 by apost team

An incredibly talented father and daughter, Kris and Dayla Jones from Alvarado, Texas, have been gaining an impressive online following after they posted a video of themselves singing together in their car in 2017. The video is of Kris and his then 15-year-old daughter singing Keith Urban’s song “Blue Ain’t Your Color,” and it features incredible harmonies by the pair. They both have serious talent, and their voices blend together beautifully.

The duet followed another car performance, a cover of Chris Stapelton’s “Tennessee Whiskey” performed by Kris, which earned the family the attention of Ellen DeGeneres. After his version of the song went viral, Kris became known as “Tennessee Whiskey Dad” and DeGeneres knew she had to invite the pair onto her show for an interview and performance by Kris. Kris was then offered representation by Pearce Entertainment and began releasing his own music under the label.

At the time they posted the video, Kris was a contractor and spent a lot of time away from his family. Whenever he would get the chance to drive around with his daughter the two would always sing together, it was a way for them to bond. You can tell how much Dayla loves her father when she listens to him sing. Her face completely lights up at the sound of his honey-like voice.

Kris can also thank his wife, Destinie, for sharing his video on Facebook, where it gained a huge following and helped him become an internet sensation. Destinie has always been a supporter of Kris’s singing career and even encouraged him to audition for singing competitions to showcase his talent to the world. His career never really got off the ground — that is, until Dayla filmed him singing in the car and he became a viral star overnight.

Kris told the Dallas Morning News the story of his life leading up to fame. He grew up in Fort Worth, Texas, and he said that he had wanted to be a singer since he was a child. However, he had a difficult time growing up and ended up going to jail when he was just 17. Kris said during that challenging period in his life music was always his solace.

After he was released from jail at age 26, Kris married Destinie and they had Dayla. Destinie encouraged Kris to try out for “American Idol” and “The Voice,” but neither audition panned out. “‘The Voice’ came to Dallas. I tried out for ‘The Voice.’ I remember being out there … thousands of people with all of these beautiful voices around me, I was one of the last groups that went in. It was crazy because I walked in there … I opened my mouth and about seven words came out, and they were like ‘Nope,’” he told Ellen. After that experience, he put his music career on hold for a while and focused his time on his family and being a contractor.

After Kris shared his story on “Ellen”, producers from “The Voice” invited him to return and get a chance to be on the show, but he declined the offer and said he needed to spend time with his family. This decision did not end up hurting his career, however. He gained 500,000 followers on Facebook after his television debut. It was not long after that he released his own self-titled EP, which made it to the top 40 on the iTunes Country Albums list the week it was released.

Kris’s EP came out in March of 2018 and featured four new original songs as well as his cover of “Tennessee Whiskey.” The four singles were titled, “You Rescued Me,” “Big Black Truck,” “Mean Like Fire” and “I’m Breathing.” The EP showcases Kris’s smooth and soulful voice and was met with a good reception from listeners, according to Taste of Country. Kris said his musical influences were George Jones, Vince Gill, Garth Brooks and Alan Jackson.

After the video of Kris singing went viral his life changed forever, but he also got to be a part of someone else’s life-changing moment. In 2017, just four months after the interview with Ellen Kris was invited to perform at a wedding by a Houston-area man that wanted to surprise his daughter on her wedding day.

In the video of the performance, the DJ can be heard announcing Kris. “Actually, that isn’t the correct track, ladies and gentlemen. It’s a special surprise for Savannah, we have live and in-person, Mr. Kris Jones performing this song for the bride and groom,” he said before Kris performed his cover of “Tennessee Whiskey.” The video of Kris surprising Savannah has over a million views on YouTube.

Kris has had a whirlwind start to his music career. The one constant has been his family and their support for him has never wavered. The video of Kris and Dayla performing their duet is the most popular video on Pearce Entertainment’s YouTube channel with over 6 million views. Kris should consider showcasing his daughter's incredible talent on his next album!
