TikTok just keeps on giving

The popularity of social media platform TikTok rose exponentially in 2020 when many of us were cooped up at home. The platform is great for fun challenges like doing trendy dances, playing pranks, and even sweet ones you can do with your family members like the “Grow Up With Me” and the “Cuddle With Your Kid While They Watch TV” challenges. These videos bring us joy and brighten up our day whenever we need a pick-me-up. The touching ones can also move us to tears. Even celebrities are having fun with it. One of the most notable aforementioned celebrities who has become an avid TikTok user is none other than Gordon Ramsay. Back in March, he took on a viral TikTok dance challenge known as 'Juice Sauce Little Bit of Dressing' with his daughter, Matilda "Tilly" Ramsay, 18, as they danced to Yung Gravy's “Cheryl”.

The 53-year-old chef often post TikToks on his own page as well as appearing in videos on Tilly's page. The father-daughter duo shared their own version of #fliptheswtich another viral TikTok challenge where two people dance to Drake's Non-Stop. Once he says the lyrics, "Look, I just flipped a switch (flipped, flipped)," the participants flip their lights on and off and suddenly they've switched clothes, actions, whatever. In the video, Gordon starts out by wearing a turtleneck and dancing with a pepper grinder while Tilly is wearing a white dress and stirring a pot. The two dance around, the switch flips, and then we see Gordon rocking the hell out of the wrap dress and Tilly looking very refined in the turtleneck.

Jamie Nyland

Another Brit who has been making waves for his entertaining TikTok videos is Jamie Nyland, who is 24 years old, according to The Sun. Jamie, who has a verified TikTok account with more than 2.4 million followers currently, often posts videos of him and his dad Richard Nyland getting up to shenanigans, like this one of them doing a ping pong ball challenge where it ends with Richard getting a raw egg smashed on his head. Jamie also regularly gives surprises to his dad like giving him a new phone after playing a prank of breaking his old phone, buying his dad a brand new TV, and even a new computer. There is no doubt that Jamie is devoted to his father and genuinely loves him. But in January of 2021, he did something even bigger than getting new gadgets as gifts for his dad.

An incredible surprise for his dad

On January 3rd, 2020, Jamie posted a compilation of when he told Richard that he has completely paid off his mortgage. Paying off your mortgage is a big deal. Not only does it signify an achievement, but it also comes as a huge relief as you would not have to worry about paying for it any longer. So Jamie decided that he wanted to give this to his dad, as a way of saying thanks for working so hard his whole life to provide for the family, and ultimately, so that Richard can finally retire.  The video starts with Jamie entering his dad's bedroom and throwing him the keys to his house.

“Why did you give me them for?" Richard asks.

"I've just paid off your mortgage," Jamie replied. "I've literally just rung the bank and paid off every single penny left on your mortgage. You now own this whole house. I swear. You've worked your whole life so now you can actually retire."

Initially, Richard thought this was like a boy-who-cried-wolf situation, as he assumed that Jamie was just up to another one of his pranks. As Jamie tried to convince him that it was all real, Richard just repeated the word 'no.'

Finally, when Richard realized Jamie was telling the truth, he started to break down crying. Touched, Richard told his son that he could not possibly accept such a grand gesture, but Jamie insisted that it was a done deal. Richard then told Jamie that he is “ the best son in the world you can have.” But then, Richard revealed a secret.

Richard asked Jamie to hold his hand out. Richard, who was still visibly overcome with emotions, handed the keys back to his son and told him:

"It's in the will. The house is yours — what's mine is yours."

Jamie was in disbelief. “Are you serious?” he asked his father.  "I love you so much,” Richard replied to Jamie. “You paid off my mortgage, I've put you in my will. You retire me for life so I've set you up for life."

The video ends with the father and son hugging and Jamie captioned the clip: "I love you Dad."

Needless to say, the moving clip has tugged at viewers’ heartstrings. As of this writing, the video has been viewed by more than four million users, making it one of Jamie’s most viewed TikTok videos to date. Fans took to the comments section to praise Jamie and send the father-son duo their kind words. "You're so lucky to have each other," one user wrote. "Well done to your dad for raising such a loving and respectful son."

Some people asked how Jamie was able to afford to pay off the mortgage, especially being so young. "For everyone asking 'how' - I did Vine for four years and I've done YouTube for 10 years,” he wrote. “It's been my only goal. I'm so thankful for everything."

Richard, too, is a TikTok user. In his bio, he describes himself as “Daddy of Tiktok,” and boasts a decent following of about 257,000. He usually posts dance challenges and videos of him and Jamie doing fun things. Now that he can retire, we can expect more quality content from him!
