Have you ever been involved in a situation where you witness someone else being mistreated by another person, and you have to decide if and how to respond? This is just such a story. It’s told from the perspective of a shopper witnessing how a cashier responds when her coworker is verbally abused by a rude customer.

You Can’t Say That

The customer is checking out at her regular grocery store. She’s familiar with the bagger, who she describes as a “a sweet man with a mental disability.”

As the bagger is carefully bagging her items, he notices one of her canvas bags has a hole in it. So, he stops to ask if she wants him to still use it. She thanks him and kindly asks him to use a different one.

This simple interaction somehow irritates the woman next in line. The impatient woman yells, “God! Hurry it up!” Our kind customer just tells the lady that she’s just now finished paying and that the bagger is fine. The woman behind her responds by asking if she’s slow like him, and she goes on to say that “all you special people need to stop interfering with normal people.”

The kind customer notices that the bagger now appears offended. Apparently, he wasn’t offended for himself, though, because his response is in defense of the kind customer. “Ma’am she’s not not-smart. She goes to university. She’s real smart.”

The university student returns the compliment, saying: “He’s the best bagger here! He’s very careful, ma’am, which is a good thing with groceries.”

The woman next in line is apparently quiet long enough for the bagger to assist the nice customer in gathering and shouldering her bags. She says he already knows that she walks back to her dorm with her groceries.

Seeing this spurs the rude woman to once again inject her opinion. She demands to see a manager because the bagger isn’t helping take the bags to the nice customer’s vehicle. She’s already called him slow. Now, she adds “delinquent” to the barrage of insults.

The kind customer interjects that she walks and explains there’s no need to call a manager over something she’s asked the bagger to do for her on many occasions. When the bagger tells the nice customer to have a nice day, the rude customer calls him a “retard.”

You might’ve noticed that the cashier hasn’t been mentioned in the above interactions. According to the customer, the cashier remained stoic and silent during the above. But, the customer calling her bagger a “retard” dramatically changed how this interaction ended.

The cashier calmly looks at the rude customer to inform her that her discriminating words have repercussions. “Refusal of service for massive discrimination towards a valued employee, as well as a regular customer. You may leave your items here. We will shelve them later. Please leave.”

The impatient, rude, and now infuriated customer decides to throw a tantrum. As she’s breaking things and physically restrained, the bagger leads his regular customer to safety while they wait for the authorities to arrive.

In the end, the bagger looks at his nice customer to worriedly ask if she’s still coming to the store next week. She says, “yep,” and that’s all he needed to make her day with a big smile.

The story is reminiscent of the television show ”What Would You Do?” This world holds rude and discriminatory people, but it also holds many champions not willing to stand by for injustices and wrongs. The kind customer who offered this story and the cashier in it are case and point of the latter.
