Whales are known for being social creatures. They travel in groups and live for decades together. When you are swimming at the beach, nothing is better than getting to see some humpback whales swim by.

In one amazing case, one diver got way more than she bargained for.

One Woman Cuddles a Whale

In this surprising video, you can see two divers out in the ocean. The video is from the Australian photographer, Eamon Porter. He used a drone to film everything that ended up happening. At first, you can see the divers maintaining a safe distance from the humpback whales. One of the whales was an adorable baby who was just playing around in the waves. The baby whale kept splashing and playing in the water, but she quickly became bored. It turns out that whales are just like human children. The mother whale was enjoying a nap, so the baby whale decided to get into trouble while her mom was distracted.

The young whale swam up to the divers to investigate.

As the women watched in amazement, the baby whale swam up to them and flipped onto her back. Then, the whale swam underneath one of the divers and flipped the diver onto her belly. Now that the diver was cuddled on top of her stomach, the baby whale paused and enjoyed cuddling her. Then, the whale used her tail to push her body forward and away from the diver. In a few moments, the whale calf was swimming back to her mom. The divers could only watch in amazement as the magnificent creature swam away.

Porter was completely amazed by the footage that he caught on the drone camera. Normally, human beings deliberately try to interact with nature. In this case, nature interacted with humans. While the mother whale knew that humans were nearby, she never stopped her baby from exploring. Porter thinks that the whale must have trusted the humans not to harm her calf.

This cuddly story could have had a tragic ending if the whale had decided to flex her might. An adult whale can weight as much as 50 tons. Thankfully, the whale calf had no desire to hurt the divers. A similar story happened in Australia with a boatload of tourists. As they sat on the boat, a humpback whale breached right next to them. The whale was so huge that it swamped the boat with water. While watching the playful whale was fun, it was certainly a very wet experience!
