Eight High School Girls
Eight girls decided to participate in their high school talent show. When it was time to perform, they appeared on their Queensland school auditorium stage in coordinating costumes. Lively music and a chorus-line formation revealed they were there to dance.
The girls' costumes were half black and half white. They also wore coordinating sunglasses and yellow headbands. The girls might have looked smart, but the purpose of their attire was ingenious.
Black, White And Bound Together
In this routine, some of the girls wear shirts that are white on the left and black on the right. The other girls wear shirts with the colours reversed. All of the girls are wearing black stockings and one leg of a white pair of pants.
Pants With Purpose
Since the black stockings are under the black sides of the shirts and the white pant legs are under the white sides of the shirts, it creates the illusion that the costumes are either black or white.
The white pants are of a bulkier fabric than the black stockings, and the waistband rests between each pair of dancers. Alternating black-white with white-black costumes further enhances the illusion of white pants-clad dancers before the dance even begins.
Onto The Stage
As the girls make their way onto the auditorium stage, their classmates begin laughing. Watching these dancers move as a unit while wearing each other's clothing is hilarious.
Then, the upbeat music begins. As the girls begin to dance, they work hard to move adjacent legs as one unit. This is because the optical illusion of this dance needs more than the right costumes. It requires intense coordination.
A Slow Start
The beginning of the routine features gentle swaying back and forth. Then, the girls progress to walking forward and backward. It looks like a simple chorus line routine but involves much more concentration because each leg must move in tandem with the legs of the surrounding dancers on each side.
After several seconds, the dance quickly becomes much more complicated. Each dancer lifts their white pants-clad leg to create the illusion of dancers in white pants jumping. Then, each dancer does the same with their black stockings-clad leg.
