Tiffany Marquez thought she was attending just another softball championship game. Little did she and the rest of the audience know that they were all going to be part of a semi-historic event.

It was a Friday Evening in Fresno, California. The players and crowd were gearing up for the conclusion of the High School softball season. The teams were warmed up. The loud and very vocal audience was excitedly waiting for the opening ceremonies.

Usually, the game would begin with the playing of the United States national anthem, but not this Friday. Instead, the announcer informed everyone in attendance that because the national anthem had been played during a game earlier in the evening, it would not be played before the game.

The crowd immediately showed their disapproval with a chorus of thunderous boos and jeers.

Shortly thereafter an unexpected and truly extraordinary event occurred. Whether it was one or two people in the stands that began singing the national anthem initially is unknown, but within seconds the entire crowd was standing in allegiance and pledging their support of the nation in song and verse.

Bob Kayauanian, the event coordinator, stated that when there are multiple games played at the venue, the National anthem is usually run at the beginning of the first game and not repeated during the following games. It was a practice they had been using for quite some time.

When pressed further the practice and about the spontaneous act of national pride he stated, "It was a wonderful moment, everyone standing up in favor of their country, showing off their patriotism."

The actual softball game was exciting, but a bit more ordinary. The Cougars of Clovis High School defeated the Bears of Buchanan High to win the softball championship.
