When a jogger in Atlanta, Georgia saw a dog huddled under a car she knew that something was horribly wrong.

The horribly injured dog dragged herself towards her would-be rescuer and wagged her tail as the startled Good Samaritan approached. Despite having suffered a vicious attack the little dog was still friendly and open to human contact.

The Good Samaritan called New York-based Second Chance Rescue NYC Dogs, where the staff sprang into action to save the pup. Upon closer examination, it was revealed that she had a crushed leg, internal injuries as a result of a bullet lodged in her abdomen, and a broken jaw.

In a video of Lilac uploaded when the rescue first found the dog, a representative of the rescue wrote:

"It appears that multiple dogs attacked lilac for what looks like days on end. Lilac's gruesome injuries are beyond the scope of what animal control have the resources to care for. Her jaw is severely broken, her bones are exposed, and she is covered in puncture wounds everywhere. One of her legs appears to be broken, one leg looks like it may have severe nerve damage, and everything is swollen and painful to the touch. She has a gaping, open wound on her leg that you can literally see through to the other side. She is barely 20lbs and looks like she has had multiple litters Lilac has endured suffering for a very long time, SHE IS FILTHY, and the smell coming off of her is VILE. To see this in person is a very heartbreaking scary sight. There is a very real chance she may lose some of that bottom jaw."

It was clear she had been brutally attacked by both animals and humans. Despite her suffering, the injured dog remained positive and friendly, wagging her tail every time one of the staff approached her.

Her condition was precarious for several days. The pup, who was eventually named Lilac, would undergo several surgeries before she could recover.

The medical staff was unable to save Lilac's leg, but she was able to make a full recovery otherwise. Through it all she remained positive and gentle, lapping up all of the attention that the enamored staff could give her. Lilac's desire to live inspired many of the staff and many more who heard about her story through social media.

After making a full recovery, Lilac was adopted by a loving family in Georgia. Her new family is grateful to the rescuers and strangers who have helped Lilac pull through with their skills and positive energy. More importantly, though, is the strength and heart of the wounded dog and her will to live.
