Last night, Christiano Ronaldo had an emotional interview with ITV’s Piers Morgan that left the 34-year-old in tears.

Ronaldo was shown an old clip of his late father, Jose Dinis Aveiro, discussing the growing success of his son as an internationally renowned football player.

Jose Dinis Aveiro was a soldier in Mozambique and Angola, an experience that had deeply effected him. Aveiro eventually died of liver failure in 2005 at the age of 52, following years of alcohol abuse.

The interview featured a clip of Aveiro speaking of his son’s then newfound fame. The video brought Ronaldo to tears. "I never saw the video. I never saw that video. Unbelievable,” he told Piers.

"I think the interview would be funny, but I didn't expect to cry. But I never saw these images. I don't know where you... I have to have these images to show my family.”

The football legend went on to reveal that his relationship with his father was complicated growing up. "But I really don't know my father 100 percent. He was a drunk person. I never spoke with him, like a normal conversation. It was hard,” he explained.

The moving interview caused an outpour of love and support by fans across the globe on social media. “It just shows where there is success there's heartbreak and that your dad will be looking down and feeling proud of what you have become GOAT without a doubt 100% respect bro,” one user wrote on Twitter

“Wow. Didn't realize that you were so down to earth, clearly, family orientated and driven by passion, saw a different side to you this evening. If only more sportspeople were like this,” wrote another.
