Creative Mom Dresses Up Her 3-Month-Old Daughter As Iconic Historical Women

When a baby comes into this world, it's only natural for the parents to dream about what that infant might grow up to be. Illinois mom Jenelle Wexler has given the matter more thought than most since she first decided to dress her three-week-old baby, Liberty, as acclaimed artist Frida Kahlo.

The costume and resulting photograph turned out so well that she couldn't resist making a habit out of dressing her daughter like this. When she posts her portraits on Instagram, she also includes a fair bit of history about the woman in question so that everyone who sees it can be educated about a historical luminary.

Wexler, who is 36 years old, has long made a hobby out of sewing, so this project is an ideal way for her to hone her skills. She scours craft and thrift stores for materials and costume components, and she usually works on the costumes after Liberty and her brother River have gone to sleep for the night. She has reached deep into history for some of her inspirations, including military heroine Joan of Arc and American flag creator Betsy Ross.

“I just kept thinking of all different influential women that I wanted to dress her up as,” Wexler, 36, from McHenry, Illinois, tells PEOPLE. “There were so many I could have her portray and help tell their stories.”

However, she also celebrates more contemporary figures. Liberty has portrayed Queen Elizabeth II, Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Ellen Degeneres, Malala Yousafzai and Hillary Clinton, among others. Wexler is grateful that her young daughter is such a patient model. So far, this experience has been nothing but fun for both of them, and she plans to keep it going as long as Liberty allows it.

“It’s really awesome to know that something that’s just a hobby of mine is bringing a lot of people joy,” Wexler says. “But I’m having a lot of other people say, ‘I’m learning. You’re teaching me something. I just learned something today,’ and that, for me, is really neat.”, she said to PEOPLE
