Create Your Own Essential Oil Hair Mask

Nov 13, 2018 by apost team

Do you know all the things that can mess with your hair health? Styling products, pollution, blow-drying, and UV rays all stress your tresses. There's an easy way to undo the damage: a DIY mask. A few simple ingredients will give you the soft, shiny hair you've always wanted.

What You Need

  • Essential oil. Try mixing and matching until you find the perfect combo for your hair. Lavender and peppermint essential oil both increase hair growth. Rosemary increases hair thickness. Lemongrass essential oil will get rid of dandruff. You'll need four drops total for your hair mask. Feel free to blend!

  • Coconut oil. Two tablespoons of this act as the "carrier" for the other essential oils in your mask. It also has multiple benefits of its own. It nourishes your scalp, detangles hair, and deep conditions.

  • A towel. Not just any towel -- regular ones can pull and tug at your hair, causing frizz and split ends. Look for microfiber towels or ones designed for delicate hair. Or just use a t-shirt!
  • A comb. Preferably one with wide teeth.
  • A double boiler. Don't have one? No problem. Just use a glass or metal bowl and a saucepan. The bowl should fit snugly onto the saucepan.

  • Bonus: a spray bottle. Masks are best used on damp hair, so fill the bottle with some water.

What to Do

1. Get your double boiler going or set up your DIY double boiler. The water should not touch the bottom of the bowl. Let the water boil and then add the coconut oil to the bowl.

2. When the coconut oil becomes liquid, add your chosen essential oils and mix them together. Remove the mixture from heat to let it cool and thicken.

3. When your hair is damp (hello, spray bottle!), comb the DIY mask through it. Gently now -- damp hair is easy to break.

4. Wrap a soft towel around your hair and leave the mask in. Anywhere from half an hour to a full hour will do.

5. Rinse out the mask and follow up with a gentle shampoo and conditioner.
