Everyone loves dogs. Sadly, there are some challenges that come with caring for elderly dogs. For some owners, caring for a dog that requires a special level of care becomes too much for them. At many dog shelters, these elderly dogs can not find a home.

However, Chris and Mariesa Hughes from Clifton Park, New York, knew the wanted to do something about those unloved elderly dogs. The couple decided to transform their home to accommodate up to twenty elderly dogs. The entire renovation process cost over $55,000 and, according to them, it was worth it.

Finding Homes For Hundreds of Elderly Dogs

The couple has made a huge impact in the lives of many elderly dogs. In fact, the couple has been able to care for hundreds of elderly dogs and find homes for many of them.

One of the biggest expenses was a $30,000 hydrotherapy pool that allows the dogs to benefit from some low impact exercise. Other expenses around the home include dog-friendly ramps, floor mats, plastic sheets, and more.

Meeting the Special Needs of Older Dogs

Older dogs face some special challenges. For instance, an elderly dog will not be able to run. Additionally, most elderly dogs will begin to go blind. This can cause the dog to walk into walls, fall downstairs or fall off a bed. That's why it was important for the couple to create a home that was both comfortable and safe for older dogs.

Finally, older dogs need to feel safe. Because these dogs are blind, they can easily become frightened when they are approached or touch. In many cases, the dog will snap at anyone that tries to touch them in an unfamiliar manner.

The Special Relationship That People Have With Dogs

For many people, a dog is one of the best friends that they can have. That's because dogs can offer unconditional love and companionship. That's why people around the world have taken dogs as their pets for thousands of years.

If you want to have a friend that will be loyal to you, an older dog can be one of the best choices that you can make. What did you think about this heartwarming story?
