Couple Discovers More Than 200 Walnuts Hidden By Squirrels Under Hood of Their Car

The arrival of fall brings many changes to the outdoor environment. Temperatures drop, leaves fall, and critters begin preparing for cold weather.

For some, this means migrating to warmer climes. Others grow thicker coats or increase the amount of food they eat in preparation for times when resources are thin. For others, this means creating reserves of food that will last them throughout the winter. Take everyone's favorite tree-dwelling creature as an example. Squirrels live mostly on things like acorns, walnuts, and seeds -- all things that are hard to find during the colder months of the year. To prepare, squirrels begin hoarding these items for later.

One Pittsburgh man discovered this habit in the most hilarious way possible. Chris Persic loves the giant walnut tree on his property. He noticed something odd about it, however. It had contained a number of walnuts. Even though they fell from the tree, they were nowhere to be seen reported CNN. He dismissed it as just one of those things...until his wife called him one day with a problem. Her car had started making an odd noise, and even more alarming, it smelled like something was on fire.

Chris asked her to lift the hood to see what was happening. What she found shocked them both. Squirrels had stored more than 200 walnuts in there! There were even walnuts hidden beneath the engine. After an hour or more of cleaning out the walnuts, the Persics took their car to a mechanic to be serviced. Amazingly, the squirrels hadn't done any major damage. Still, Chris warns people to check their cars regularly for damage.

"Long story short, if you park outside, do yourself a favor and check under the hood every once in awhile," he wrote on Facebook.

What do you think about Chris and his wife's situation? Have you dealt with squirrel issues of your own?
