Couple Decides To Give Their Twin Sons “Unique” Names — Wife Disagrees With Commenters That They Are “Bully Worthy”

Becoming a parent is exciting for a lot of reasons. You have the chance to start a beautiful family and raise your child or children to become the best possible version of themselves and see all of their hopes and dreams come true. The steps leading up to becoming a parent and preparing to have kids can also be extremely fun, like picking out items for the baby’s nursery and coming up with the perfect baby name.
For one 24-year-old woman and her 27-year-old fiance, they found that they both had an inkling for what they considered unique names. The woman has a unique name herself, while her fiance goes by his middle name, which he also considers to not be traditionally standard. They’re currently expecting twin boys and have already decided on both of their names.
While the couple has become enamored with their name choices, not everyone is as thrilled. The woman’s in-laws expressed their huge distaste toward the names, as they were not traditional family names and did not have any affiliation with any of their past or present family members. They also thought it could lead to potential bullying down the road.
Both sides have remained headstrong on their stance, so in December 2021, the woman went to Reddit to ask users if they thought she was wrong for wanting to name her children something that wasn’t necessarily considered normal or traditional. As people weighed in, they gave her a pretty mixed response, highlighting both the pros and cons of the future baby names.
Sticking By Their Name Choices

In her Reddit post, the original poster (OP) talked about how she and her fiance were finally expecting twin boys after trying for a year. “We’ve never been more happy,” she said. OP explained that she, her fiance and her family are non-religious, while her fiance’s family was. As OP is now seven months pregnant, both she and her fiance have already settled on names for their future babies: Phoenix Grey and Griffin Dean.
“We’ve never been ones for the run of the mill names,” OP explained. “My name is out of the ordinary and my fiance goes by his middle name Cassius.” However, the in-laws were not as supportive as the idea of giving children names that weren’t, in their eyes, normal or traditional.
OP explained:
“My in-laws are furious. One: because they’re not traditional names, two: do not bear any affiliation to family members; my fiance is named after his grandfather, his sister is named after his aunt, etc., and three: because they’re mythical creatures from other cultures. That is apparently what they dislike the most.”
However, OP and her fiance really loved the names they chose, and even had a girl’s name picked out as well: Valkyrie Lee. “We like that all the names match in that they are powerful beings that can fly,” she said. “We want to make our children feel powerful, too.” Unfortunately, her in-laws were still not on board and suggested using the names as middle names instead, but OP and her fiance refused to budge.

Convinced They Won’t Be Bullied

“As these are the first babies of both families, my mother-in-law thinks I’m being selfish by not giving them traditional family names and that not doing so will set a bad precedent for the others,” OP said. “Am I being too stubborn?”
Many Redditors agreed that OP, her fiance and her in-laws were all somewhat in the wrong for their opinions, and many pointed out that the kids had the potential to be bullied because of their unique names. One user said, “Word of caution from a parent who gave her child a unique name. DON’T DO IT!”
Another Redditor commented, “Your children, your choice. I have an exceptionally unique name, and to be honest, I’ve hated it all my life. My parents chose it out of love, but it’s been a pain to manage. No one (can) spell it and I was bullied mercilessly for it.”
The comments prompted OP to later edit her post, where she explained that people could be bullied for multiple reasons, and said that her name choices were “not bully worthy.”
On the other hand, some people were in favor of the name choices. One user commented, “Not addressing Valkyrie, however, Phoenix and Griffin are not unheard of over here in the States. I had a sub in high school whose name was Phoenix, and I’ve met quite a few little Griffins who have come into my work.” Another user said, “My name is Phoenix and I was never bullied and I have a cousin named Griffen who was never bullied as well.”
