Recently, emotions ran high for country music artists attending the 2019 Country Music Television’s Artists of the Year awards ceremony at Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville, Tennessee.
Singer Kane Brown was grieving the untimely death of Kenny Dixon, his band’s 27-year-old drummer. Just days before the awards ceremony, Dixon died from injuries sustained in a car crash.
According to Today, Brown was unable to hold back tears when he occupied the stage to accept his CMT Artist of the Year Award.

Speaking to the crowd, the emotional singer began, “I want to dedicate this to my drummer Kenny. People didn’t think we would make it.” He continued, “He was with me the whole time. He was so supportive of me. I love you, man. I miss you. The band misses you.”
Kane’s speech tugged at attendees’ heartstrings, and when performer Thomas Rhett accepted his own award that evening, he decided to say a prayer for those who were suffering the loss of Dixon.
From the podium, Rett said, “I just want to lift up Kane and his family, and I want to lift up his drummer and their family. I don’t know if this is very conventional, but can I just pray, really fast? Is it OK with everybody?”
With a bowed head, the country crooner offered an unrehearsed prayer on live television.
“Father God, we love you so much. Loss is something that we can’t comprehend, and so right now I pray that you would be with Kane and his family and his drummer Kenny and his family, and bring them peace that only you know how to bring somebody.
In conclusion, Rett said, “Thank you for this night. God bless country music. We love you Jesus, and in your name, we pray, Amen.”
When country legend Reba McEntire accepted her Artist of a Lifetime award, she acknowledged Rhett’s courageous choice to lift the audience up in prayer, stating that the gesture took “guts.”
In 1991, Reba lost eight band members in an airplane crash. She felt the prayer was fully fitting. She admitted, “That’s what we need in this world, a little more God.”
At times, courage is required to properly get through difficult moments, and Thomas Rhett proved that he puts faith first. Who do you think could be uplifted by Rhett’s fearless faith in God?
