These four were already popular on their own in the country music world. We knew them as Kris Kristofferson, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, and Waylon Jennings.

The four superstars had been working together on a television special when they decided to come together to work on this project.

The Highwaymen recorded the following three studio albums, which were all hits: HighwaymanHighwayman 2, and their last album, The Road Goes On Forever. The four were active in the music industry from 1985 through 1995.

The first album shot to fame with the lead single known as Highwayman. It became a number one hit and even won a Grammy in 1986 in the “Best Country Song” category.

Marty Stuart is the genius behind the song, as he was the one who introduced it to Johnny Cash. He believed that the song embodied “four souls” and “four verses,” a perfect fit for the group of four singers. They thought so, too, and poured their hearts into the song.

The four great singers took turns when it came to the different verses of this song. First up was Nelson, then Kristofferson, next was Jennings, and then Cash finished the song off.

The four men felt the song was perfect for them as they considered themselves to be the outlaws of country music. Plus, the lyrics related to their life on the road. We totally agree!

Before the group started their performance at the 1993 Farm Aid concert, Cash took the stage and said a few kind words about his fellow group members and friends, “It’s great to be here, thank you. We’ve had a pretty good run, these guys and me. These are the three fellas, we’ve been across the country and around the world together.”

He gushed,

“And there’s still no one I’d rather introduce than my musical comrades, Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings and the baby-faced kid from Texas, named Willie Nelson. They call us The Highwaymen.”
