A drunk driver. Three starving children. That's what police officers found after a routine traffic stop back in February 2016.
Deputies Sam Rodriguez and Roger Garcia saw a vehicle swerving on the wrong side of the road and decided to pull the driver over.
What they found inside the car was heart-breaking.
Three children, ages 5, 2, and 2 months were sitting in the back seat. Their father, Jeffrey Salas, age 24, was up front, intoxicated. He was driving drunk with his kids in the back.

The younger two both had soiled, smelly diapers on. The youngest was in an unbuckled car seat, starving and crying the entire time.
The situation hit the officers hard, though they had to maintain their composure.
The deputies secured the children and made sure they couldn't see their father being handcuffed and being put in the back of the patrol car. They didn't want the kids to have any further trauma.
Once the father was secure, the officers turned their attention to the little ones. The infant was starving, so they had to try and make a bottle of forumula in the dark.
Garcia asked the other two if they were hungry. The kids didn't know when they had eaten last.
So, there were a bunch of cops trying to make formula on the side of the road. They had a cold water bottle and tried using their heater to warm it up.
Rodriguez reflected that he had babysat when he was a kid, but never as an officer with a gun on his belt and a rifle sitting next to him.
After calling for backup, the officers got the younger two into fresh diapers. Then, they took the older two for a late night meal at McDonald's.
Anger is natural in this case. The father's decision to drive under the influence is selfish and dangerous. His neglect of the children is even worse. But, the officers try to remain upbeat for the children's sake.
It's truly hard to remain professional in this type of situation, according to Deputy Rodriguez. They try to keep things together so the kids' feel secure.
The Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department is proud that their deputies are so compassionate, serving and protecting the community. The community showed their love as well, by commenting on the social media posts about the incidents.
One person said,
"God bless you. You used professionalism and compassion and did the hard job that needed to be done."
