The life of a police officer is both strenuous and rewarding. Most police officers take their oaths to help and defend the members of their community very seriously, often stepping up to lend a helping hand even when they’re off duty. Such was the case recently for an officer in Florida.

Back in September, K9 Deputy Jeremie Nix of the Marion County Sheriff’s Office was driving home after a long day serving the people of his state when he noticed something startling on the side of the road. A car was flashing its hazard lights as the driver beckoned for someone to help her. The driver of the car, Nechole Cromwell, was paralyzed with fear as Kingston, her baby boy, wasn’t breathing. Speaking with reporters from WKMG-TV, Deputy Nix recalled how Nechole had run to him as he pulled over, thrusting the baby into his arms and pleading that the officer do something to save her son’s life.

Deputy Nix sprang into action. Remembering his training, the officer began chest compressions as Nechole dialed 911. After a few moments, Deputy Nix only heard one small gasp escape the baby. With Kingston’s life in his hands and no sign of help coming, Deputy Nix knew that he had to take drastic action. Gripping the infant tight, the off-duty deputy drove Kingston and his mom to the nearest hospital. Throughout the intense drive, Officer Nix prayed to God, both to help Kingston and to thank Him for putting him in the right place at the right time to help the young family.

Arriving at the hospital, doctors and nurses immediately got to work on Kingston, saving the child’s life. Nechole would later recall Deputy Nix bringing her the good news, attributing her baby’s survival to God and the amazing work of Deputy Nix. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office praised Deputy Nix’s handling of the situation on Facebook, with Nechole adding that he was Kingston’s guardian angel.

Following the incident, Deputy Nix and his family grew incredibly close with Nechole and Kingston, so much so that Nechole asked Nix and his wife Nikki to be Kingston’s godparents. The two now refer to themselves as Kingston’s aunt and uncle, posting photos to social media of the many times they babysit their new godson. For his part, Deputy Nix is just happy to be part of the young child’s life and set him on the right path.
