Contractor Rips Roof Off The Wrong Family's Home Leaving It Exposed

The following story might seem outrageous and that is because it is. The crazy tale, however, isn't as rare as you would think. Contractors do arrive at the wrong addresses all the time. When you aren't familiar with a neighborhood, confusing Elm Street with Elm Ave or Elm Lane is possible. Typically though, contractors will usually find the right house.

And then there are those times when contractors perform demolition work on the wrong house by mistake. Disasters like that do occur. Recently, in Kansas City, a contractor tore the shingles off the wrong roof. The right house was a block away reports Fox.

The owners, Mary and Kapelle Wyat, weren't thrilled over the surprise roof work. While the contractor didn't tear the entire roof off, the removed shingles left the interior exposed.

Covering the roof would provide some necessary protection, but the bad situation became worse when the rain started to fall. Falling rain soaked the roof's wood, making it soft. Stepping on the roof to place a cover on it would become dangerous to walk on. So, the rain could now enter the house.

Mercifully, the owners did not live in the house. It stood as a vacant property they owned and maintained.

Likely, the equity of the home added to their net worth. The torn roof and interior damage, sadly, drove down the value of the property. While unfortunate, the outcome is unavoidable. A damaged, distressed property loses its value.

The roofing contractors that tore off the roof did not correct the mistake. No new roof is forthcoming, creating a terrible situation. Apparently, the homeowners are on a fixed income and do not have the money to fix things.

The Wyatts have filed a police report and were advised that they will probably have to settle the case in civil court.
