Nick recently gave a stunning performance on the American Idol stage. However, this shining moment follows a time of darkness in his life.

Nick was always proud of his brother Zach. He'd joined the Air Force and ended up working his way up the ranks. In the end, Zach was a crew chief.

At the time, Nick was living in California. That's when he got the call that would change his life.

Shockingly, he'd found out from his own father that Zach had committed suicide.

Nick was heartbroken, but he decided to keep going. He relocated to Japan, but this decision would end up being one of his biggest regrets.

While he was abroad, he found out that his other brother had also committed suicide. His little brother Matt was gone from this world.

Nick felt as if he should have never gone to Japan. He feels guilty because he thinks that he should have been there for Matt. That heavy burden of guilt became his constant companion.

Now, Nick is on the stage telling his story. You can tell that the judges are fighting their own tears.

That's when Nick broke out in song. He begins belting out a James Bay song called Let it Go.

It's a stunningly emotional performance.

Afterward, the judges expressed their deepest sympathies. They spoke kind words. However, Luke Bryan could identify with Nick's story more than most.

Chris was Luke's older brother. Sadly, he was killed in a car accident when Luke was only 19 years old. After that, his sister passed away while she was watching her toddler. The doctors never figured out her cause of death.

She just passed away out of nowhere.

Luke showed enormous empathy for Nick. He told him how proud he was of him for continuing to fight through his grief. Bryan continued by pointing out that Nick must be a beacon of light for his grieving parents.

In the end, Nick found out that he's going to Hollywood! After the show, Luke Bryan decided to offer some comfort to the family. He told them that it is alright to cry, especially when they're crying tears of joy.

Bryan then turned to both parents and told them that there are many happy and good days to come.
