Conjoined Twins Celebrate 10 Year Anniversary Of Being Separated And They Are So Cheerful

Isabelle and Abby Carlsen are twins that are leading a normal, happy life. However, things weren't always so typical for them, as they used to be conjoined twins. At birth, the two girls were connected at the chest

Their parents made the decision to have them separated, which is something they say was an incredibly difficult decision.

Separating conjoined twins is extremely complicated, especially in the case with Isabelle and Abby. While doctors can devise a plan to separate conjoined twins, each and every situation is different. When doctors perform typical surgeries, they are replicating procedures that they have done over and over.

This is drastically different than surgically separating conjoined twins, as each case is very different. Their organs were tangled together, so doctors had to devise a strategy to safely separate the organs. This required months of planning, with hundreds of doctors involved.

A team of doctors was on hand for each organ, as well as a surgical team. In essence, the surgery required over a dozen specialist teams and took over twelve hours. After months of planning, doctors got ready to perform the complex surgery that would potentially give the girls their independence.

The surgery wound up being a complete success, as doctors were able to separate the two girls. Aby and Isabelle are now ten years old and are leading completely normal lives. They have recently celebrated their tenth anniversary of being separated by doctors.

They say they don't have any recollection of being conjoined, but this is understandable because they were separated when they were just six months old.

While they don't have any memories of being connected at the chest, they do some things that would suggest they have some sort of innate memory. Sometimes they find themselves clasping their hands together in the same manner that they did when they were connected.

Abby and Isabelle are extremely fortunate that their surgery was a success, as there was no promise that it would be. When you are about to separate organs, there is always a chance that the surgery will not be a success.

This can lead to one of the twins dying, which is why it is so miraculous that they are both healthy today.
