Community Thrilled After Police Officer Of 22 Years Is Approved for Transplant List

It’s always an incredible thing to see a community that comes together to support one of their own. It is so incredibly beautiful to see so many people, some of them merely acquaintances, coming together to show support for someone in their time of need. This was the case when the entire community of Sapulpa, Oklahoma rallied behind one of their local police officers.

Captain Glenn Coffey Jr. had been living with stage 4 liver disease. He had proudly served the Sapulpa Police Department for 22 years, even after receiving his diagnosis. His liver disease was hereditary. Hi father, who also worked for the police force, was diagnosed over 10 years ago, receiving a successful liver transplant.

Coffey and his family had spent a good deal of time waiting to hear if he had been approved for the liver transplant list, waiting earnestly to find out if he was a candidate for the transplant. The Sapulpa community could not simply stand by and wait.

A Facebook page was set up to support Coffey as they waited to hear if he would be eligible for a transplant. Members of the community also created a fundraising website with the tagline “We Like Our Coffey Strong.”

The entire community stood behind their police captain as he and his family waited to hear the news.

Soon after the page was created, Coffey received the great news that he was approved for a liver transplant. However, he and his family weren’t out of the woods just yet. They are still waiting to see if Coffey’s insurance will approve the transplant.

Grappling with insurance companies can be a long and arduous process for us all, and it can be especially difficult for people who are waiting to hear whether or not a life-saving procedure like a liver transplant will be covered.

His community has stood strong in support, both verbally and through an outpouring of donations, some from complete strangers. The community has also put together a card fundraiser, a T-shirt sale and a charity softball tournament to rally around Captain Coffey.

Every person in Sapulpa has committed to do whatever they can to support the Coffey family during their time of need.
