Community Fundraises $37,000 For Compassionate Store Cashier Who Paid For Woman's Groceries

19-year-old John Lopez, Jr. had no idea that his small act of kindness would go viral and end up with him having enough money to go to college. The Princeton, Texas man was working at his job as a cashier at a Walmart last Christmas when a woman came through his line and realized that she did not have the money to pay for her items. You never know who is watching when you perform a good deed.
Laci Simms was standing behind the woman in line and witnessed the entire exchange. When Lopez realized that the customer did not have the funds to pay her bill, he told her not to worry about it and that he would take care of the total himself. What makes this more surprising is that the bill was over $100.

Simms was so touched by the kindness of the cashier that she posted about the incident. It did not take long for the story to go viral. Lopez said that when the customer started crying that she could not pay the bill, he knew that he had to do something to help. He credits his parents for always teaching him to do the right thing and bring people up when they are down.
An acquaintance of Lopez named Brandon Weddle knew that the community should do something to show their appreciation for the generous cashier. While he did not know Lopez well, he said that the man was always so nice to his customers. Weddle took action by setting up a GoFundMe page for Lopez, encouraging people who have been touched by the kindness of Lopez to contribute so that the cashier could achieve his dream of going to college.
'I’m just glad that he got recognized this year, and I’m glad the community stepped up to help him,' said Brandon in Inside Edition.
The campaign raised over $37,000 for Lopez to put toward college. In addition, Princeton Mayor John-Mark Caldwell presented the young man with a certificate of appreciation while Police Chief James Waters gave Lopez a medallion.
