Collin Gosselin Makes Bombshell Claims About Mom Kate’s Parenting Behind Closed Doors

Collin Gosselin is opening up about the troubling childhood experiences he says took place behind the scenes of his family’s reality TV fame.
The 22-year-old, who starred alongside his parents, Jon and Kate Gosselin, and his seven siblings on “Jon & Kate Plus 8,” has made a series of allegations against his mother in his new memoir, “In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood.”
In an interview with ABC News’ Juju Chang ahead of the book’s Oct. 13, 2026, release, Collin reflected on what he described as a stark contrast between the family’s public image and his experiences at home.
“Simply put, my whole life that I lived was a lie,” he said. “All the things you see on TV, lies.”
Among his most disturbing allegations, Collin claimed that his mother made him sleep in a locked room in the family’s basement following his parents’ 2009 divorce. He alleged that the arrangement isolated him from his father and siblings.
According to Collin, a wall separated the room from the rest of the basement, and his sleeping arrangements included an air mattress. He also claimed that two cameras were installed so his mother could monitor him.
In excerpts from his memoir reported by PEOPLE, Collin described having to call out through the cameras when he needed permission to leave the room to use the upstairs bathroom.
He also alleged that he was made to eat separately from his siblings, sometimes waiting until the family had finished dinner before being allowed upstairs.
Collin claimed the situation became so distressing that he once had an accident because nobody came to let him out of the locked room.
He further alleged that his mother physically mistreated him, recalling an incident in which she allegedly dragged him by his ear. He said a teacher noticed his earlobe was swollen, which prompted him to speak with a guidance counselor.
“My mom was not very happy that I spoke about that,” he told ABC News.
Collin also recalled being removed from school in fourth grade and said he was frightened when child protective services became involved. He alleged that, after attempting to run away, his mother restrained him with zip ties and locked him in the basement room.

Collin further alleged that his mother sent him to a behavioral health facility shortly before his 12th birthday, where he was medicated and had little contact with his family. He said he was told the placement was for his own good, but believed his mother wanted to protect her public image.
Kate has disputed allegations of abuse in previous statements. In 2016, she told ABC News that Collin had been sent for treatment because of educational and social challenges, describing the decision as the best thing she could do for him at the time. In a 2023 statement, she also cited his psychiatric diagnoses and said the facility had been necessary for the safety and well-being of the family.
More recently, Kate appeared to address the controversy in TikTok comments following the memoir’s release. Responding to a supporter, she suggested that people who understood mental illness would recognize her perspective.
Meanwhile, Collin’s father has publicly supported his son. Jon Gosselin has defended Collin following the memoir’s release, expressing pride in his decision to share his experiences and pushing back against claims that his son’s account should be dismissed on mental health grounds.
The family first became household names when “Jon & Kate Plus 8” premiered on TLC in 2007, documenting their lives as parents to twins Cara and Mady and sextuplets Collin, Hannah, Leah, Alexis, Joel and Aaden. The couple announced their divorce in 2009, and the series later continued as “Kate Plus 8.”
Collin’s memoir revisits that period from his perspective, raising questions about what viewers did not see while the cameras were rolling. He has also spoken about the lasting impact of his alleged experiences and his desire to use his story to help other children.
Despite the deeply strained relationship between mother and son, Collin has indicated that reconciliation could remain possible if they were able to speak honestly about the past.
For now, his memoir offers a deeply personal account of a childhood spent in the public eye — and of the painful experiences he alleges happened away from it.
